Assessment titleQuantitative Assignment
Submission Time and Date:  To be submitted by 23:59 UK local time on 18/12/2022
Word Limit:2000 words.
WeightingThis coursework accounts for 60% of the total mark for this module.
Submission of Assessment  This assignment should be submitted electronically.   It should be submitted online via Turnitin by the given deadline. You will find a Turnitin link on the module’s eLP (Blackboard) site in the Assessments folder. The link is labelled as Quantitative Assignment and says ‘SUBMIT YOUR FINAL ASSIGNMENT HERE’ underneath it. It must be formatted as a Microsoft word document (.doc) or a PDF.   Submissions will not be accepted via any other means. If you do not submit your assignment using the designated online assignment submission tool on Blackboard, it will be treated as a non-submission leading to a failed assessment. It is your responsibility to ensure that your assignment arrives before the submission deadline stated above. See the University policy on late submission of work below. It is also your responsibility to ensure you obtain proof from Turnitin confirming your submission. When you successfully submit to Turnitin you will see a screen that states Submission Complete! You will see your submitted assignment after the Submission Complete! screen disappears. You are advised to click the digital receipt icon to download a digital receipt. This receipt is a record and evidence of your submission date and time. This is what you will need to produce if there is any query about your submission (including date and time) and where it was submitted to. Assessment regulations, policies and guidance  Please see the final page of this assignment brief for details of assessment regulations, policies and guidance.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE ASSESSMENT:

We have collected data from the module group using the Cognimapp software. Hopefully you engaged in the data collection because that will help you understand what the different tests were. If you have not yet completed the tests then you can still do so via this link https://cognimapp.com/studies/2hsaFhspSi- 4SfUyoLn6sQ/signup/anon/ . However, it may be too late for your data to be included in the data set for analysis. The aim of this assignment is to use a range of statistical tests in order to investigate some potential lifestyle and biological influences on cognitive performance. The data are in the SPSS file ASSIGNMENT_COGNIMAPP.sav. The variables that were obtained from the tasks and questionnaire you completed are summarised in the table below.

VARIABLE NAMEVARIABLE DESCRIPTION
SRTSimple reaction time in milliseconds
CRT_ACCChoice reaction time accuracy (%)
CRTChoice reaction time in milliseconds
STROOP_ACC_CONGStroop task accuracy on congruent word colour trials (%)
STROOP_ACC_INCONGStroop task accuracy on incongruent word colour trials (%)
STROOP _RT_CONGStroop task reaction time on congruent word colour trials in milliseconds
STROOP_RT_INCONGStroop task reaction time on incongruent word colour trials in milliseconds
AGEAge of participant in years
SLEEP_HRSHours of sleep participant had last night
ALCOHOLDid the participant drink alcohol last night?
EXERCISEDoes the participant take part in regular exercise?
MOODRating of mood at time of test from 0 (sad) to 100 (happy)
CAFFEINEDid the participant consume caffeine on the day of testing?
WORD_ACCWord recognition accuracy (%)
WORD_RT_CORRECTWord recognition reaction time for correct responses in milliseconds
PIC_ACCPicture recognition accuracy (%)
PIC_RT_CORRECTPicture recognition reaction time for correct responses in milliseconds

There are a number of questions for you to answer that are detailed in the brief below. You will be required to use SPSS to analyse some of the variables in order to answer these. This assignment is not to be presented like a lab or research report. The aim is for you to demonstrate you can identify the correct test(s) to use for each question, correctly use SPSS or JASP to conduct the test(s), and to report appropriate summary tables and textual presentation of the findings with reference to statistical significance and effect sizes where appropriate. You should avoid over-analysing the data ie running and reporting additional tests that are not required to answer the questions as this can in fact make your answers less clear. It is important to note that you must not change the data set in any way eg as a consequence of non-normality or the presence of outliers.

The Brief

  • Calculate and present descriptive statistics for the four variables that relate to word and picture recognition. Present and comment on tests of normality for these variables, histograms with normal curves, and boxplots that may indicate the presence of outliers. Present and comment on a matrix of scatterplots between variables. Conduct Pearson correlations between variables and report in line with accepted conventions. (15 marks)
  • Conduct appropriate tests to compare the impact of caffeine consumption on the variables SRT, CRT_ACC, CRT, Sleep and Mood. Present the findings in line with accepted conventions and comment on the results. (20 marks)
  • Perform an analysis to examine the extent to which the variability in Picture recognition reaction time (PIC_RT_CORRECT) might be explained by changes in Alcohol use, Sleep, Age and Mood. In addition to reporting the overall result, calculate and comment on the individual contributions the four predictors make. Conduct and comment on tests of collinearity and heteroscedasticity. (30 marks)
  • The Stroop task is made up of stimuli that are congruent (word and colour match) and incongruent (word and colour do not match). Analyse the data for congruent and incongruent stimuli to evaluate the extent that congruence affects accuracy and reaction time. (15 marks)
  • Analyse the data to identify if alcohol use and exercise affect word recognition accuracy. Do the two factors interact? (20 marks)

Appropriate referencing may be required in this assignment. All references must be in accordance with APA guidelines.

ASSESSMENT REGULATIONS AND GUIDANCE

ASSESSMENT REGULATIONS, POLICIES AND GUIDANCE

The University has a number of policies for assessment. You are advised to read the guidance for students regarding assessment policies. They are available online here.

LATE SUBMISSION OF WORK

Where coursework is submitted without approval, after the published hand-in deadline, the following penalties will apply.

  • For coursework submitted up to 1 day (24 hours) after the published hand-in deadline without approval, 10% of the total marks available for the assessment (i.e.100%) shall be deducted from the assessment mark. For clarity: work that is submitted up to 24 hours late that would have scored 65%, 55% or 45% had it been handed in on time will be awarded 55%, 45% or 35% respectively as 10% of the total available marks will have been deducted.
  • Coursework submitted more than 1 day (24 hours) after the published hand-in deadline without approval will be regarded as not having been completed. A mark of zero will be awarded for the assessment.

These provisions apply to all assessments, including those assessed on a Pass/Fail basis. The full policy can be found here.

WORD LIMITS AND PENALTIES

The word count is to be declared on the front page of your assignment.

If the assignment is within +10% of the stated word limit no penalty will apply.

Note that the word limit INCLUDES the main body of text, in text citations if used [e.g. (Smith, 2011)], and direct secondary quotations if used [e.g. “dib-dab nonsense analysis” (Smith, 2011 p.123)].

However, the word limit DOES NOT INCLUDE a title page, contents page, tables, figures and their titles, reference list or appendices. If you wish to include appendices, they must be clearly numbered, labelled, and referred to appropriately in the text. The purpose of appendices is to provide context or verification for the marker.

The full Word Limit Policy is available here.

Students must retain an electronic copy of this assignment (including ALL appendices) and it must be made available within 24 hours of them requesting it be submitted.

ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT

The Assessment Regulations for Taught Awards (ARTA) contain the Regulations and procedures applying to cheating, plagiarism and other forms of academic misconduct. The full policy is available here

You are reminded that plagiarism, collusion and other forms of academic misconduct as referred to in the Academic Misconduct procedure of the assessment regulations are taken very seriously. Assignments in which evidence of plagiarism or other forms of academic misconduct is found may receive a mark of zero.

Avoiding academic misconduct

Student guidance to avoiding plagiarism can be here

As Turnitin is also a plagiarism detection tool you are advised to submit a draft version of your assignment to Turnitin to check your work before submitting the final version to Turnitin for marking. Your assessment tutor will give details of how and where to submit a draft assignment. The originality report for your final marked submission will be made available to the marker via Turnitin.
