This is deigned to be a community organisation established based on an original idea that you have.
It is NOT intended to be a review of an existing community organisation (that is a task that has been set for assessment 3).
What does this assignment entail?
This assignment gives you the opportunity to create your own community organisation to address a need or issue that is important to a community that you care about.
The purpose of this assignment is that you can demonstrate your understanding of the elements of governance and management of community organisation and can apply them in a proposal for a community organisation.
You can use your creative flair in your proposal to show your passion for your community organisation by including graphics and visual images.
What are acceptable formats for this assignment?
You can choose to present your proposal for a community organisation either as:
- PowerPoint presentation: An equivalent number of slides is a maximum of 8 slides. If you are using a PowerPoint presentation, please limit your word count to 800 words. You may also include an additional slide to list any references that were used, which is outside the word count.
- A word document.
Whichever format you chose, please convert your assessment to a Pdf of Pdf-G document prior to submitting. This will preserve any visual images and graphics in your proposal.
What is the marking criteria?
This essay will be marked according to three criteria, adding up to 20 marks:
Application of key concepts (10 marks): This is how you demonstrate an understanding of the elements of governance and management that are covered in the unit and can incorporate them into your proposal in way that they are logically connected with each other. This includes:
- Identifying your community and the need that your organisation will address;
- A Vision and a Mission Statement;
- A set of organisational goals/objectives;
- Clearly defining key roles in the governance and management of the organisation, and your understanding of the difference in these concepts;
- What your approach you will take to fund and resource your organisation.
Consistency and coherence (5 marks): This shows that you can express your ideas clearly and coherently in written form, using a consistent style of writing and referencing.
Creative expression (5 marks): This is the inclusion of creativity work, either in your written style, presentation, and/or the inclusion of graphics and images.
Can I propose any type of community organisation, or must it relate to social services?
The community organisation that you propose doesn’t have to be linked to the social services sector. It has been deliberately left open for people who might consider other areas such as sporting group or community interest action groups (for example, a local environmental action group). The main consideration is that the idea can be linked to an interest area of a community and it has a social purpose.
Do I need to think of a community organisation which will operate in Australia, ort can it be outside of Australia?
You are not required to limit yourself to Australia and can think globally. Just make sure that you define the community that your organisation is focussed on.
How should I reflect the governance and management roles in my organisation?
What the assessment is looking for in this part is that you can show your organisations as having accountability back to the community that its intended to (governance) as will as the skills and expertise for the effective running of the organisation (management).
You may represent the key governance and management roles in an organisation chart. An example of an organisation chart was included in slides for Lecture 7B,
although you should look to adapt or create an organisation that fits your organisation’s vision and mission.
Also, only including an organisation chart by itself may not be sufficient to describe the key roles, so you should also complement any diagrams that you include with some explanatory text.
Can I develop a proposal for a organisation that aims to do similar work to a community organisation that already exists?
Given the breadth of activity that community organisations, I would not be surprised if there are community organisations that do similar work to what you are proposing, This does not matter in yourself, but try to incorporate your original thinking in the way in which you build your organisation. Also take care to avoid copying exactly what other organisations do.
How many references must a use?
There are no set number of references required for this assignment, and there is no expectation for you to cite academic references for this assignment.
You may choose to refer to statistical data, community reports or policy papers. This will add to the depth and quality of your proposal by providing evidence demonstrating a need for what your community organisation will do, or in justifying why you have chosen a particular structure or strategy.
If you do use materials that you have sourced, you should reference it. Any creative works, such as photos or images, that you use should also be attributed.
Can I send my tutor a draft of my essay to review prior to submission?
You can ask questions of your tutor or the unit coordinator, but unfortunately, they will not be able to review of draft of your assignment before you submit it.
How do I seek an extension?
You may find you need to seek an extension if you are finding it difficult to meet an assignment deadline due to extenuating circumstances. In most cases it isn’t a problem – the teaching team is trying to help people get through. It is important to ask yourself here first however: “Will this help me or am I putting off a problem?”
All requests for extension must be submitted through the WesternNow portal via the following link: wsu.service-now.com.”> |
Once you log into WesternNow Home Page, select the following options:
My Study
Exams and assessments
Extension for assessments.
Once you have completed the form and uploaded the supporting documents, click on Submit to register your request for extension.
Please note that your Tutors cannot grant an extension for assessments. Additionally, the Unit Coordinator cannot grant an extension without the appropriate form having been sent through the WesternNow, which is then issued to the Unit Coordinator. Proceeding to request an extension without following the appropriate channels will only result in a delay in you receiving a response.
- Please remember that you need to provide some evidence as to why you need the extension and that you will still need to apply even if you already have an Academic Integration Plan (AIP).
- You must abide by the conditions surrounding an ‘Extension’ and/or ‘Special Consideration’. This includes having to continue to work on your submission (as much as is possible) whilst you are awaiting your response.
