Assessment Task: Research paper (80%)

The research paper is worth 80% of the marks for this subject. The paper should be a maximum of 8000 words in length. The paper is due on Friday of week 12 (8 April 2022).

Students can devise their own topic in an area of interest. In the alternative Rachael is available to assist with developing an appropriate topic.

Assessment criteria for the research paper:

1.Your demonstration of DR knowledge and understanding.

An excellent research paper will:

• identify the relevant subject content and concepts relating to the topic
• discuss/analyse the content and concepts at a deep level
• show an ability to choose appropriate authorities for the discussion and analysis.

2.Your ability to structure a logical analysis on a DR topic.

An excellent research paper will:

• have a clear introduction, body, and conclusion
• define the topic area and its context
• clearly scope out the structure of the approach to the topic
• provide a logical flow of proposition/analysis and evidence.

3.Your ability to analyse a DR topic and develop a scholarly argument.

An excellent research paper will:

• develop a persuasive position
• integrate evidence into the argument and weigh sources by evaluation and judgment
• consider contrary positions and evaluate different perspectives
• demonstrate a level of independent and analytical thought
• draw appropriate and logical conclusions.

4.Your written communication skills.

An excellent research paper will:

• demonstrate high level communication skills through very clear and logical expression
• use appropriate headings, appropriate paragraphing and plain English
• be error free in terms of proof-reading, sentence structure, grammar and spelling
• be expressed in your own words
• use an appropriate tone/voice.

5.Your legal research and referencing skills.

An excellent research paper will:

• demonstrate a level of independent research as required to adequately address the issues in the topic
• use appropriate sources for analysis of the topic – for example, a range of appropriate scholarly literature
