Context:
In this course, we have studied social and cultural diversity and the necessity of demonstrating cultural competence in the counselling context. In particular, we have studied the particular case of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who face significant socio-economic disadvantages in Australian society and whose cultural backgrounds are distinct from mainstream Australian culture. To effectively assist a client from this background, counsellors need to demonstrate cultural awareness and sensitivity in their sessions.
For this assessment, present a PowerPoint presentation showing awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural background, beliefs, values and behaviours that a counsellor should be aware of in order to successfully treat such a client. Show how you would respond to such a client in the
counselling context in ways that would demonstrate cultural competence. What kind of counselling skills would you use in such sessions to ensure that you do not ‘lose’ your client?
As this is a PowerPoint presentation, you are also being examined on your presentation skills as much as the content. So, try to make your presentation interesting – use photos, music, minimise wording by using words effectively and letting the pictures speak for themselves.
– All presentations should be referenced in accordance with the APA 6th Edition referencing guide
The Presentation is to be submitted by the end of Week 11.
Submit your Presentation through the Assessment 3 submission link under Assessment found in the main navigation menu of the subject Blackboard site. Your assessment will be formally graded via the Grade Centre by your Learning Facilitator and feedback will be provided through My Grades.
Due date: By 11:55pm AEST/AEDT Sunday of Module 6.1, the end of Week 11.
