200503 – Construction Information Systems – Assignment 1 outline
Assessment 1: Assignment 1 (essay) (group of 4 to 5 students) – 20%
Overview
• Assignment 1 is on the advanced software and hardware technology and communication tools presently used in the building industry. It is a group assignment with individual topic by each group members. So this assessment has two parts.
Part A – Individual part- You need to form a group and select a topic for your research. In this part you need to submit a brief summary of your individual topic.
Part B – A group report to be compiled by combining all the individual reports of the group members.
Group Size:
- Minimum 4 – Maximum 5 members in a group.
When to start forming groups
- Start forming groups from week 1. You have to be in a group by week 4.
How to form a group?
- Attend online lectures, tutorials, talk to students.
- Use the discussion forum to find people – Groups

Details
This Assignment will be 20% of Assessment in Construction Information Systems. It is to be presented in report format on A4 paper suitably bound in a cover and it must be word processed.
Presentation, conciseness, thorough research and relevance of material will be rewarded. All sources are to be acknowledged and correctly referenced.
Five (5) topic areas are listed below. Any group with less than 4 members must cover any four topics and the group consisting more than four students will require to cover a number of topics equal to the number of members in the group (for example a group with five students will require to cover any five topics)
- Topic 1: Advanced technology – Hardware
- Topic 2: Advanced technology – Software
- Topic 3: Communication technology
- Topic 4: Expert System
- Topic 5: Future directions in building information systems
The whole report should be around 2000 words for all topics (minimum 500 words per topic).
You are not expected to cover the whole topic area. You are expected to investigate in detail an: issue, facet, technological advance, new product, etc. on each topic area.
For example; you are expected to outline the followings for any of the topic:
- System requirements and features (advanced capabilities)
- Relevance to the Construction Industry
- Cost Benefit in comparison to relevant software or hardware
Part A – Individual part – Brief summary/outline of the individual topic
Each student in a group must select a specific title form the given list of topics and give a brief outline of what you intend to do including possible sources (references) of your data, relevance to Construction Industry, and comparison with the relevant systems including brief features in week 3, and submit individually via turnitin. You may be asked about your topics in week 4 in the lecture.
Part B – Final group report – Collection of the individual reports
By Week 4 you must form a group on vUWS and collaborate to complete the report. All students must read the final report and make sure each of you have researched separate topic area and once checked then submit the full report via turn it in in week 8. One group member can submit the group report. The group report must clearly mention the individual contributions of each group member. The report format should be a standard report format.
Note: If want students can change their topic for the group report.
Assessment schedule and submission deadlines:
Part A – Individual summary – identification and outline of individual topic: 5% (due in week 3 Friday 11;59 pm via Turnitin)
Part B – Final group report combining all the individual reports – 15% (due in week 7 Friday 11:59 – online via Turnitin)
Marking Criteria and Standards for outline and group report
