Instructions
This is a real‐world case study‐based assignment. Follow the steps and answer the questions below:
Step 1
Choose 3‐4 companies listed in the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) Ltd. Have a quick look at their recent annual report, website, and management report, etc. Do they have sufficient information about their performance in recent years (say, 2017‐2020)? If yes, you can nominate these companies and send an email to the subject coordinator (Dr Omar Bashar) for approval to do your assignment on them. It must be done by week 3 class of the semester.
Step 2
The subject coordinator will approve only one company from those you have selected. You will do your assignment on the approved company only. You should not start working on your chosen company without prior approval from the subject coordinator.
Please note that no two groups will have the same company in the assignment. Each group will work on a different company.
Step 3
Once your selected company is approved, download its annual report, management report, and any other relevant document from ASX website and the company’s website. You may also collect some information about the company from other authentic (well known) secondary sources.
Step 4
Read the collected information in step 3 above, and answer the following questions:
- What are the main business functions of the company? Its main revenue sources, expenditures and customers? Who are the company’s major competitors? 10 marks
- List and elaborate on the sources of funds and applications of funds of the company. In your answer, discuss why management has chosen finance activities from those sources of funds. 8 marks
- Have there been any changes to the company’s financing strategies in the last few years? If yes, in what context? In your answer, explain what may have prompted changes in the companies financing strategies and what internal planning and decision making processes may have been used in guiding these strategies. 12 marks
- Explain any major global factors that might have impacted financial performance of the company in the last 3‐4 years. Do you find these global factors impacting governance and ethical issues in the company’s financial decision making process? 10 marks
