THE TASK
Our world is now a world of information. On the one hand, this makes many things easier, more fun or even possible but on the other it can cause us to be overloaded with information and being distracted by our constant connections. You are a newly hired project officer and media advisor for a new e-commerce multi-national delivery service Safe & Speedy which will deliver parcels by drones. Safe & Speedy’s clients will be national and international e-commerce organisations who require delivery services within Australia. It is expected drones will be used to deliver parcels from distribution centres across the country – for example at airports and shipping ports for the distribution of imported goods, and from dedicated distribution warehouses for goods made in Australia. The drones will be required to deliver parcels to addresses in cities and regional areas in Australia. Unfortunately, the person tasked with the job of writing the funding proposal (report) has unexpectedly left the organisation and did not work on the project. Hence, you have been asked to complete the task subject to certain time constraints. There are two (2) requirements in this task.
REQUIREMENTS
- Firstly, on behalf of your manager, you are required to compile a REPORT for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (Australian Government) justifying why Safe & Speedy should be permitted to operate their parcel delivery service using drones. You are to address both the benefits and the challenges to the technology. As this report will inform a future proposal, it should allow for mitigating factors for identified challenges. Securing a permit is difficult, and hence you are expected in your report to outline the benefits of safe and secure operation of drones in Australia. Drones are a very cost-effective alternative to traditional modes of delivery services such as private couriers’ cars and trucks. Drone delivery is also a green alternative to carbon-producing delivery methods. This initiative is in line with the government’s push to supporting STEM disciplines and technologies. STEM is an approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The final details of government funding, necessary infrastructure, routes and time frames for operation are yet to be decided, but Safe&Speedy feels now is the right time to lobby the Australian Government and to seek support from the general public for this important technological initiative. Public support may also sway the Australian Government to support Safe&Speedy’s vision. The report should be approximately 1500 words in length. A Microsoft Word template for the report structure can be downloaded from under the Assessments tab.
- Secondly, your manager (not you) will be presenting this report to Government representatives and invited media to announce this exciting new technological opportunity. It is expected the audience will ask some challenging questions, and hence you have also been asked to write three (3) pre-emptive questions with a sample answer for each. This should be approximately 500 words in length
RESOURCES
You manager has provided you with the following six (6) resources as a starting point only. You WILL need to find more!! You are expected to reference at least ten (10) sources of information, including newspaper articles, industry reports, journals and other sources. You may however include the sources provided by your manager as part of your bibliography.
- Australia Post-tests drones for parcel delivery.
- Drug ring allegedly used drone against police before $30 million cocaine bust.
- Types of drones.
