ASSIGNMENT TASK:
Utilising appropriate and relevant links to theory, you are required to write an individual essay based on any tour operator of your choice.
TASK GUIDANCE:
You should produce a written essay that focuses on three strands:
- Provide a critical explanation of the planning process tour operators undertake when selecting a new destination or new product to bring to market (700 words).
- Using a tour operator of your choice, you are to investigate their product portfolio typology and make a reasoned argument for the introduction of a new niche tourism-based products (700 words).
- You need to look at and analyse different types of media for marketing and promoting destinations that tour operators can utilise to reach their target markets (700 words).
- Other 400 words will used for introduction and conclusion (200 words each).
- Your analysis and recommendations should be supported by reference to current trends within tourism.
- A list of references should also be submitted, which reflect the comprehensive list of sources available for this module.

MARKING CRITERIA:
The following is an indicative marking criterion for your assignment:
• Structure/clarity of communication/flow of discussion will account for 5%;
• A critical review of the planning process tour operators undertake when selecting a new destination or new product to bring to market; identifying key factors that have/could have an influence on the process. The articulation and analysis of this discussion, along with supporting evidence, will equate to 25%;
• A justification of your chosen tour operator that should investigate their product portfolio typology and make a reasoned argument for the introduction of a new niche tourism-based products in. The articulation and analysis of this discussion, along with supporting evidence, will equate to 25%;
• An identification and analysis of different types of media for marketing and promoting destinations that tour operators can utilise to reach their target markets. The articulation and analysis of this discussion, along with supporting evidence, will equate to 25%;
• A suitable introduction and effective conclusion will equate to 10%;
• References – quality and range of references (at least 10 references across different sources are expected). The currency of the data (how recent is the data) is critical, as your analysis and recommendations should be supported by reference to current trends within tourism. Marks for references will also be embedded with the sections above, but the extent, presentation, currency and quality of the references will account for 10%.
