Assessment 2: Portfolio AGS101 AT2
Due date: Monday 16 January 2023 by 8pm
Word Count: 1400 words
Worth: 35% of the overall mark for the unit
Referencing Style: Deakin Harvard Referencing
Instructions:
This portfolio assessment provides you with the opportunity to showcase your knowledge of two key weeks in the unit thus far.
- Choose two weeks you’d like to focus your portfolio on from weeks 4-8 (inclusive)
- For each week, select a key issue, concept or text that was explored in that week’s materials (lecture, study notes, readings, seminar discussions) that you can base your portfolio around. For example, you might choose to focus on a contemporary trans* issue like the moral panic around Safe Schools, or the sex wars of the 1980s. You could focus on a key concept like intersectionality or third wave feminism.. This list is by no means exhaustive, please reach out to your tutor and/or unit chair if you’d like to check and workshop your idea.
- Develop an argument, perspective or proposition in relation to that issue or concept. For example, you might forward a position on a contemporary feminist issue. You might do a close analysis of an advertisement, music video or film and its relationship to changing understandings of masculinity.
- Choose a different output for each of your two weeks (see below).
- You must engage with at least one reading/scholarly/academic peer-reviewed source from the unit for each week. This means there should be a minimum of two scholarly/peer-reviewed academic sources from the unit in the assessment. While it is not compulsory, you may draw upon your own research from other scholarly book chapters and journal articles, the best responses will use more than the minimum. You should include properly formatted citations in the body of your essay and a list of references at its conclusion.
- There will be time allocated to working on this assignment in seminars and support will also be available in online discussions, so there will be lots of opportunities for you to work with your lecturer and tutor to make sure you are confident in your work,
Options:
Choose two of the following weeks to base your portfolio around:
- Week 4: Feminisms
- Week 5: Masculinities
- Week 6: Transgender rights
- Week 7: Sexuality, oppression and liberation
- Week 8: Intersectionality: then and now
Although not compulsory, try to engage with two weeks/topics that are different from each other.
Choose two of the following output options (a different one for each week):
- 700-word minor critical essay that argues a point
- 3:30 to 4-minute (500-600 word speech) narrated presentation (PowerPoint with audio) (this link provides information on how to create a narrated slideshow, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/record-a-slide-show-with-narration-and-slide-timings-0b9502c6-5f6c-40ae-b1e7-e47d8741161c)
- 500-word photo essay with 3 images and 100-200 words in captions. These images can be created by you, or they can be sourced from the internet (and cited accurately).
- 700-word personal reflection in response to how this issue or concept has challenged (or affirmed) something in your own life, or how you view the world. This should still be informed by critical sources and research.
- 700-word analysis and response to a case study you have found (for example, a film, a piece of policy, curriculum, a music video, a collection of news articles, social media posts, poetry, etc.)
Remember, each response must contain an argument, proposition or perspective. If you’d like some help doing this, please contact the unit chair. The best way to choose your focus is to find one key idea that struck you from the week and develop your view on it.
Some examples of what you might do include:
- A critical essay that responds to a provocation or question from one of the weeks.
- A video presentation that builds a case about a topical issue from one of the weeks.
- A photo essay that uses three images to prove a point about something in everyday culture that relates to one of the weeks.
- A personal reflection that shows how a key idea or reading from the unit has altered how you view the world.
- Response and analysis to a particular case study that’s grabbed your attention.
Submitting the work:
