CIVL5550: Civil Infrastructure Design
Assignment 4 – Intersection Upgrades and Interchange Station Design
Due: This Week
Submission Instructions:
1.
Submit a report of approximately 10 pages, covering the following:
Part 1: Intersection Upgrade Design
•
Propose upgrade schemes for two sign-controlled intersections and one signalized intersection
•
Use SIDRA to evaluate the performance of both the original and upgraded intersections
•
Use VISSIM to visualize both versions
•
Provide a comparison of key performance indicators (e.g., delay, queue length, LOS)
Part 2: Interchange Station Layout and Simulation
•
Design an interchange station layout that includes a rail platform, a bus platform and a park-and-ride area
•
Use VISSIM to simulate the flow of pedestrians and vehicles within and around the interchange station
•
Provide a clear layout plan, showing:
•
Functional areas (rail platform, bus platform, car park)
•
Arrows/paths for pedestrian and vehicle flows
2.
Upload your SIDRA and VISSIM files together in one compressed folder (.zip format)
Note: Please include screenshots to summarize the results from SIDRA and VISSIM in your report.
Technical Requirements
Part A: Intersection Design
•
Use traffic flow data provided in Assignment 3
•
For the signalized intersection:
•
In the original version, simulate bus flows by adding bus stations and lines
•
In the upgraded version, apply bus priority strategies
•
Assume 4 bus lines pass through Ranford Rd’s bus station with 1 bus every 15 minutes per line
Bus Stop at Ranford Rd
Part B: Interchange Station
Bus Platform
•
Design 6 bus bays including 3 bays for eastbound buses from Ranford Road and 3 bays for westbound buses
Design Area
•
Each bay serves one bus line
•
Bus frequency: 1 bus every 15 minutes with 20-40 passengers
•
100% of passengers alight at the station
•
All passengers must walk to the rail platforms
Rail Station
•
Model one rail platform (either side or island type, single or multi-layers)
•
Train frequency: 1 train every 10 minutes
•
Each train carries approximately 150 passengers
•
60% of passengers alight at this station
•
Pedestrian access must be provided from both the bus area and the park-and-ride zone
Park-and-Ride Area
•
Design for approximately 150 parking spaces
•
Each car parks for 20-60 minutes
•
Passengers must walk from the parking area to the rail station
•
Include vehicle entry and exit paths
Note: If certain parameters are not specified, you may make reasonable assumptions and state them clearly in your report.
