Weighting: 50% of unit grade
Length and/or format: 2000-word equivalent
Purpose: This task requires you to demonstrate your ability to apply your theoretical understanding of language and literacy theory to design, implement and assess activities in the early years classroom
Learning outcomes assessed: 1,2,3,4,5
How to submit: Via Turnitin on LEO. Links to online resources must be emailed to your tutor
Return of assessment: Feedback and grades will be available on LEO
at the end of semester when grades have been finalised
Assessment criteria (rubric to be provided on LEO):
To obtain a PASS grade on this assessment, a student should demonstrate:
- Basic understanding of major theories of children’s emergent and early literacy development and their implications for practice [LO1, LO2] as evidenced by discussion of the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) model and its application in the design of learning activities [LO1, LO2, LO5]
- Basic understanding and application of assessment principles and procedures [LO3]
- Basic understanding of the needs of learners with English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EAL/D) and how to support their language and literacy development [LO4]
- Basic English academic writing skills and APA 6 referencing in respect of grammar,
spelling and punctuation, appropriate sentence structure, expression of ideas, organisation of the report, citation of sources and reference list
