Assignment overview

The intervention report is divided into 4 sections.

Section 1: The rationale for the intervention.

Section 2: Identification of barriers and facilitators in the selected community/population based on the socio-ecological model.

Section 3: How the intervention would be conducted

Section 4: How the intervention would be evaluated using the RE-AIM framework.

As a guide:

Sections 1 and 2 (combined) will be approximately 500 words. Sections 3 and 4 (combined) will be approximately 1000 words.

Further information for each of these sections is provided below.

You need to select one (1) of the six (6) intervention aims below to be the focus of your assignment.
Aim 1Increase primary school children’s physical activity during school time
Aim 2Increase the physical activity levels of older adults living in aged care homes
Aim 3Increase the physical activity levels of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults living in remote communities in Australia
Aim 4Decrease high school students’ sedentary behaviour
Aim 5Decrease sedentary behaviour in office workers in large organisations located with Adelaide’s Central Business District
Aim 6Decrease sedentary behaviour in adults living in disadvantaged areas of South Australia

Please ensure that you use your selected aim as the title of your report.

Section 1: The rationale for the intervention

In this section you should explain why a physical activity and/or sedentary behaviour intervention is needed in the population you selected. This essentially sets the scene for the intervention. For example:

  • What is known about the physical activity and/or sedentary behaviour levels of the group you are targeting?
  • What are some of the gaps in knowledge?
  • Why is an intervention needed?

This may include (but is not limited to) considerations such as what are the activity levels in the chosen population, what are the potential benefits of increasing physical activity and/or decreasing sedentary time for health and well-being, what has been trialled previously in this population, and have previous efforts been effective (or not).

The information presented in this section should be supported by external sources of evidence (i.e., you will need to reference existing literature) and clearly link how this information is informing the rationale. External sources may include journal articles and trusted organisation websites.

Section 2: Identification of barriers and facilitators in the selected community or population based on the socio-ecological model.

In this section you should identify and describe barriers and facilitators that you believe are relevant and appropriate to your selected community or population based on the layers of the socio- ecological model. The identified barriers and facilitators should link to the proposed intervention in Section 3. Multilevel interventions that address factors from all levels of the socio-ecological model tend to be more effective, so do ensure that you have thoroughly considered all levels.

To help you complete this section, a table is provided in the Intervention Report template. Identify at least one barrier and one facilitator for each level of the socio-ecological model and describe how

(for example) this may be a barrier to physical activity or facilitate higher levels of sedentary behaviour.

Please note: The barrier and facilitator cannot just be the exact opposite of each other. For example, you cannot say a barrier is a lack of active transport options, and a facilitator is the provision of active transport options.

Hint: Systematic reviews can help to summarise barriers and facilitators within different populations.

Section 3: How will the intervention be conducted?

In this section you should clearly describe how you plan to conduct your intervention to achieve the stated aim.

  1. Give a general description of the people your intervention will target
    • E.g., age, sex, health status, socio-economic status, etc
  • Explain how you will recruit them to be involved in your study
    • How will people find out about your study?
    • How/where will you advertise/promote your study? Why are you proposing to use these methods?
    • Who can provide consent to participate?

Hint: Be specific regarding your choice of intervention promotion. You can provide examples if you wish.

  • Explain what the intervention involves
    • Will you involve any stakeholders in the design/development of the intervention?
    • What will your target population be asked to do?
      • Link to the identified barriers/facilitators
    • How long will the intervention last? Why?

Hint: Provide sufficient detail so that if someone else had to conduct your intervention they can follow the plan.

  • Explain how you will determine whether your target population has increased their physical activity and/or decreased their sedentary behaviour.
    • How are you going to assess physical activity and/or sedentary behaviour?
    • What is the outcome variable of interest (e.g. minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity per day)?
    • Is the assessment valid/reliable?
    • Why did you select the method?
    • How frequently will you assess physical activity and/or sedentary behaviour?
  • Describe which parts of your planned intervention are considered population-wide risk reduction strategies
    • Interventions do not just target individual behaviour but also aim to address risk reduction as part of the intervention.

Hint: If you do not have anything detailed that addresses this, you will need to consider how to build this into your intervention plan.

Section 4: How will the intervention be evaluated using the RE-AIM framework.

In this section you should clearly explain how your intervention will be effectively evaluated using the RE-AIM framework.

RE-AIM is a framework to guide the planning and evaluation of programs, and consists of 5 key outcomes: Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance. These outcomes are identified and incorporated into the planning of an intervention.

To help you complete this section, a table is provided in the Intervention Report template. Outline for each component what, how, and when you will measure it.

Consider the following:

  • What – Link back to your aim and the RE-AIM components.
  • How – What outcomes are of interest and how will you measure these? Make sure you justify the use of the measures to show that you have considered any relevant factors (e.g. cost, burden, feasibility).
  • When – The RE-AIM components are measured at different time points. You should have considered this in the intervention plan in Section 3.
**REMEMBER THAT THE ASSIGNMENT IS ONLY ASKING FOR THE INTERVENTION PLAN – NOT THE RESULTS***

General information

You can use images, figures, and tables to convey details concerning the proposed intervention as needed (but this is not essential). You must refer to them directly in text and supply appropriate captions and legends (e.g., Figure 1 shows the intervention timeline).
