Description / Requirements
GROUP PROJECT (20%) – Group Project (15%) + Individual Reflection (5%)
Group Research Project – Business Consulting Report (1400 words) (15%)
After its success in Australian markets, Kogan.com is keen on international expansion to USA and Indian markets. They hired your group to conduct a detail analysis and suggest them if they should expand their operations to USA and/or India in early 2022. Your team also needs to suggest the best mode of entry for Kogan providing strong justification. Finally, Kogan expects you to suggest them strategies (at least 3) that could help them expand profitably in these new markets. This assignment is a written as Business Consulting Report that your team acting as consultants, will prepare for Kogan.com. Kogan.com is the same case that you have studied as part of your first assignment (i.e., the individual case analysis).
A copy of this case and its supporting documents are found in your CloudDeakin
This assignment is an opportunity for you to apply your knowledge of Business Strategy and Analysis theories, concepts, models, frameworks and analytical tools. You will demonstrate your skills in systematic analysis of Kogan’s global business environment and its plan for internationalisation. You are expected to draw on our classroom discussions, learning and teaching materials provided in CloudDeakin (case and reports), online academic journal articles and research databases that are accessible through our Deakin library. In this assignment, your group is expected to engage in research work in order to present a well-written report for Kogan.com. In other words, you are expected to go beyond the main documents (e.g., the case and industry reports) as far as necessary to present well-argued recommendations. Refer to our CloudDeakin for more suggestions on which resources to use in your research project.
Your team’s task in this assignment is to work together in conducting research that will inform your report. There are specific questions that you will need to answer that will guide you in your task. A template is provided below. The maximum number of words is 950 words (there is NO + or – %; a few lines over the limit may be considerable; we will discuss this matter a bit more during our assignment clinic sessions). A critical factor in your preparation of the report is that all sections must be cohesive and integrated. In other words, all sections should be consistent and should build on one another.
Please use Times New Roman font, size 12, double space and 1-inch margin in all sides. If you cite any reference, the reference list is NOT counted in the maximum number of words. You are free to attach appendices (not included in the word count) to support your report. However, please use appendices sparingly and strategically because these will not be marked.
Structure of the Report:
- Factors Kogan.com should consider for international expansion to USA and/or India (Approx. 600 words)
- Factor / Analysis 1: (300 words)
- Factor / Analysis 2: (300 words)
- Strategic recommendation for Kogan.com (what should they do and how can they do it profitably?) (Approx. 300 words)
- References (Not included in word count)
- Appendices (Not included in word count)
- Self-evaluation of the project (Not included in word count)

The details of each section are discussed below.
1. Kogan.com should consider for international expansion to India
Here you need to analyse the general and industry environments of India to ensure it is good for Kogan to enter. CAGE framework for also help you in understanding where Kogan should enter. Similarly, examining critical resource/capital/capability of Kogan (with respective to their competitors) might also help you understand if Kogan can gain any competitive advantage.
Your goal here is to articulate whether Kogan is strategically well-positioned and has the strategic resource or capability to exploit the emerging opportunities in India and manage risks. If Kogan is not strategically-well placed, explain how it can become one. If they are well placed, how can they move forward.
2. Strategic recommendation
Using the finding from your analysis, please suggest if Kogan should expand to USA and/or India at this time. You should also suggest Kogan how can they expand internationally to India and USA profitable managing the risks of internationalization.
The purpose of this section is for your team to make a recommendation on how Kogan can enter the Indian or USA markets. In your recommendation, be specific with your recommendation Do not simply explain and rely on research data to back up your recommendation. Make sure you anchor your arguments on our topics and the data/arguments that you have presented in the previous items (above). In other words, once you have assessed the competitive position of the firm and the key risks that needs to be addressed or be aware of, this section is where you will recommend a strategy that will build on that competitive position and at the same time will enable Kogan to deal effectively with the key risks.
3. List of references
- Appendices (not counted in the word limit)
You place here any supporting analyses/graphs, tables, etc. that you think will add value to the main points that you have presented in the report. You can use this section in a strategic way by placing supporting information (e.g. tables, figures, graphs, etc) which you think will provide more details about some critical information that you have provided or highlighted in the main body of the report.
