ASSESSMENT ITEM 2: DESCRIPTION
Shared decision-making is a model for clinical practice which includes patients’/clients’ values and preferences and supports them to make decisions about their own care and treatment options in collaboration with their healthcare team (Geddis-Regan et al., 2020). A patient’s/client’s culture affects the way they understand health and illness, how they access healthcare and how they respond to healthcare interventions. Providing safe and inclusive care is an important aspect of the health assessment.
There are standardised domains of advanced practice that support health service planning and cross-discipline team development. These domains include clinical care, optimising health systems, education, research, and leadership. Practising at an advanced level includes engaging in work-related activities such as planning and delivering staff education and development sessions (Gardner et al., 2017).
Assessment task:
You are working as an advanced practice nurse and your facility has received a complaint from another healthcare organisation regarding the treatment of a patient at your facility for a recent appointment for a health assessment. Knowing that you are completing studies in advanced practice, you have been tasked by the facility manager to use the patient’s case and complaint to deliver an education session at an upcoming multidisciplinary team quality improvement meeting.
There are two (2) parts to this assessment:
Part A: Watch the video recorded health assessment and read the letter of complaint from the Assessment Item 2 Resource Folder – Subject Site and reflect on the issues presented.
Part B: Create a narrated presentation using PowerPoint to present at a multidisciplinary team quality improvement meeting. The aim of this session is to provide some much-needed education relating to this patient and the considerations required to ensure delivery of holistic person-centred care. Using examples from the video Page 10 of 21 recorded health assessment to support your discussion, your education session must include the following four (4) components:
1. Describe a health assessment framework(s) you would recommend your colleagues use to perform the health assessment for this patient.
2. Discuss the cultural/spiritual and life stage factors your colleagues need to consider for this patient, so that delivery of holistic person-centred care can be achieved.
3. Analyze ineffective communication portrayed in the video and discuss a total of four (4) effective communication and interviewing techniques to your colleagues that they could use instead.
4. Defend how clinical reasoning and shared decision-making in collaboration with the multidisciplinary healthcare team mitigates the risk of cognitive biases portrayed in the video.
Assessment Tips:
• The first slide must contain your name, student number, subject code NS5346, study period 81, 2023, and timing/duration of the presentation.
•The last slide must contain a bibliography of any references used to support your discussion.
Students are responsible for checking that their narration has been correctly recorded prior to uploading the presentation. Submissions that do not include working narration will be marked as is. Please do not upload PDF versions, as the recording will not work. For guidance on preparing a narrated PowerPoint, consider viewing this helpful Voice over PowerPoint video.
