Overview of AssessmentInstructions to include, but not limited to: Assessors will observe the student completing the service tasks.Students may work individually or in pairs depending on class size.At any time, students may refer to technical manuals and their learning guides or Textbooks for further information.If there is a clear breach of safety, assessors MUST intervene immediately and advise the student of the breach.Students MUST successfully inspect and service diesel fuel injection systems before competency can be achieved for the practical component. Task/s to be assessedThe tasks you will be observed undertaking are: The student MUST inspect and service diesel fuel injection systems for specific applications that safely and environmentally follows workplace procedures to meet required outcomes. Decision making rulesTo achieve a satisfactory outcome, you MUST inspect and service diesel fuel injection systems on two [2] occasions in automotive service and repair workplace (simulated environment) before competency can be achieved for the practical component, and answer all questions presented by the Assessor. Expected answers to oral questions are indicative of the correct answer. You MUST look for the following in this assessment task: –  The student MUST inspect and service diesel fuel injection systems for specific applications that safely and environmentally follows workplace procedures to meet required outcomes. Performance Observation Criteria for Assessment TaskThe assessment methods MUST be by direct observation of tasks on required skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application. Your Assessor will observe you on the following observations: Obtain and read through job card to identify the correct vehicle to work on and discuss why the diesel fuel injection system requires inspecting and servicing with the customer.Access and understand the correct workshop manual for the vehicle they are about to inspect and service the diesel fuel injection system, including finding the fuel system inspection procedures, adjusting spill timing, engine start-up and shut-down and bleeding procedures and fuel system specifications, including fuel filter type and recommended replacement, air filter type and recommended replacement, and engine base idle specification.Observe all safety requirements, wear correct PPE and identify any hazards with working around high pressure diesel fuel injection systems, high voltage diesel fuel injectors, stored fuel pressures, handling flammable liquids, and lifting and supporting the vehicles or machinery on vehicle hoist or jack/stands and managed risks by following safe operating procedures (SOPs).Select the correct tools, service equipment and materials for inspecting and servicing the diesel fuel injection system on the vehicle or machinery system, and checked that the tools, service equipment and materials are safe to use, and any unsafe tools, equipment and materials are tagged out of service for repairs.Follow the manufactures workplace procedures, safely lifted the vehicle to a safe working high, and managed risks with working around high voltage diesel fuel injectors and stored fuel pressures, including using the correct PPE, aware of hot exhaust systems, flammable liquids, including high pressure diesel fuel systems when inspecting diesel fuel injection systems.Follow the manufactures workplace procedures and using tools and equipment selected, inspected and report any diesel fuel injection system leakage, worn or damaged diesel fuel injection system components, such as fuel tank, fuel cap, fuel lines and fitting, fuel and sedimenter filters, external fuel pumps, fuel vent lines, injectors and inspected the air filter and air intake housing, ducting or manifold for blockage or damage, and inspected for correct diesel fuel injection system operation, such as equate fuel supply, by checking fuel pressures and engine speed and compare the results with the workshop manual specifications.Follow the manufactures workplace procedures, report any diesel fuel injection system leakage, worn or damaged diesel fuel injection system components, such as fuel tank, fuel cap, fuel lines and fitting, fuel and sedimenter filter, external fuel pumps, fuel vent lines, injectors, air filter and air intake housing, ducting or manifold and correct diesel fuel injection system operation findings and make repair recommendations to the customer or workplace supervisor.Follow the manufactures workplace procedures, used the correct vehicle workshop manual, safely service the diesel fuel injection system by depressurising the fuel system, removing and replacing components such as; fuel and sedimenter filter and clean or replace the air filter using the correct basic hand tools and fuel line removal tools and removed and replaced components without causing damage to the diesel fuel injection system including bleeding the diesel fuel injection system, vehicle or to the environment by trapping released fuel in drip trays.Follow the manufactures workplace procedures, and used the correct vehicle workshop manual, adjusted the engine base idle and spill timing (if adjustable), and documented adjustments onto the job card.Follow the manufactures workplace procedures, and used the correct vehicle workshop manual, environmentally disposed of the replaced fuel filter and released waste fuel in the correct waste storage containers.Follow the manufactures workplace procedures, and used the correct vehicle workshop manual, carry out post-service testing to ensure that there are no diesel fuel leaks from the diesel fuel injection system by starting and running engine to full operation and road-tested vehicle for correct engine operation.Carry out a final inspection of the customers vehicle to ensure that the diesel fuel service completed are to the workplace service standards, the diesel fuel injection system operates correctly, and service indicator is reset, or service sticker is fitted with the correct next service, the vehicle is clean, seat and floor cover removed and ready to be given back to the customer.Follow the workplace procedures, clean the work area of any diesel fuel component and diesel fuel waste and disposed recyclable and non-recycle diesel fuel waste into correct waste or recycling bins.Follow the workplace procedures, clean and check tools and equipment used for correct operation and tagged out and report any faulty tools and equipment.Complete and finalise the job card/repair order detailing the service carried out, parts and materials used and vehicle inspection finding.
Assessment conditionsAssessors MUST satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.  Competency is to be assessed in the simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.  Assessment MUST include direct observation of tasks.  Where assessment of competency includes third-party evidence, individuals MUST provide evidence that links them to the diesel fuel injection systems that they have worked on, e.g. repair orders. Assessors MUST verify performance evidence through questioning on skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application. 
Resources requiredThe following equipment MUST be made available to students: Automotive simulated workplace Workplace instructions Manufacturer diesel fuel injection system specifications Two different vehicles or machinery with diesel fuel injection systems requiring servicing Tools, equipment and materials appropriate for inspecting and servicing diesel fuel injection systems. The students MUST be wearing the correct PPE. This is to include: Safety boots/shoes,Protective clothing,Safety glasses, andGloves as required The students MUST have the practical assessment sheet and a pen to complete each task.
Results/Re-assessmentYour Assessor will grade as either S – Satisfactory or NS – Not Satisfactory for the assessment. In all cases your Assessor will provide you with feedback. Only when all assessment tasks have been graded as S – Satisfactory you will be deemed C – Competent in the final result of the unit of competency; if you do not satisfactorily complete all the assessment tasks you will be deemed NYC – Not Yet Competent.If the evidence is graded as NS – Not Satisfactory you will be required to re-submit the evidence. In this case, you will be provided with clear and constructive feedback based on the assessment decision so that they can improve your skills / knowledge prior to reassessment. Where a ‘NS – Not Satisfactory’ judgement is made, you will be given guidance on steps to take to improve your performance and provided the opportunity to resubmit evidence to demonstrate competence. The assessor will determine and discuss the reasons for NS – Not satisfactory on any of the criteria and will assess you through a different method of assessment e.g. verbal/oral questioning, problem solving exercises.
Reasonable AdjustmentAssessor may adjust assessment conditions (vehicles, tools, analysis required) to suit workplace objectives provided that the integrity of the task is maintained.

Job Card 1: Inspect and service diesel fuel injection systems

Job Details:

Upon completion of this task, you should be able to demonstrate how to inspect and service diesel fuel injection systems.

You MUST inspect and service the diesel fuel injection systems on one [1] vehicles or machinery, in which the work MUST involve:

  • Service MUST include:
  • Replacing the fuel filters.
  • Servicing the sedimenter filter.
  • Bleeding fuel systems as required.
  • Servicing the air filter.
  • Environmental requirements MUST include
  • Trapping, storing and disposing of flammable liquids released from fuel systems.
  • Disposing of filters.
  • Post-service testing MUST include:
  • Starting up and running system to full operation.
  • Testing system for leaks and correct operation.

Your Trainer/Assessor has setup the vehicle that requires inspecting and servicing the diesel fuel injection systems. Your Trainer/Assessor will observe you against the performance observation criteria for inspect and service the diesel fuel injection systems

Obtain tools and equipment from your trainer. Ask your trainer to direct you to a vehicle to work on.You MUST answer the Assessor’s verbal questionsYou MUST write the customers concern (service requirements) on the front of the Job Card.You MUST carry out the inspection and servicing as specified in the vehicles workshop manual.You MUST inspect the diesel fuel injection systems. You MUST report your findings to the customer by filling in the Recommendations for the repair of the vehicle on the back of the Job Card. The customer can be your Assessor, record the conversation with the customer on the back of the Job Card.You MUST service the diesel fuel injection systems as specified in the vehicles workshop manual and MUST include replacing the fuel filter and servicing the air cleaner element.You MUST complete post service testing to confirm repairYou MUST clean-up work area, tools and equipment are stowed in their appropriate area and finalise Job Card documentation by filling in the Customers Fault, the Cause of the Fault, the Rectification to repair the vehicle and the Parts used on the back of the Job Card.
