This assignment provides you with the opportunity to determine an important research question that is crucial to address based on your reading of one of the two systematic reviews below (Part A). You will then develop a research proposal outlining the study design and methodology needed to answer that question (Part B).
Systematic reviews to choose from:
- Tan et al. Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet and mental well-being: a systematic review. Nutrition Reviews 82(1): 60–75, 2024.
- Jiang et al. The effects of organic food on human health: a systematic review and meta-analysis of population-based studies. Nutrition Reviews Published: 31 October 2023
Part A (total mark for this unit: 10%)
Part A provides you with an opportunity to improve your skills in critiquing and summarising the key findings of a systematic review. A key part of this is the identification of an important gap you wish to fill.
You are required to provide a short summary of the systematic review, clearly outlining what is known and what is unknown (ie. research gaps) about the topic. Based on one of the research gaps identified, you will then develop an aim, research question and hypothesis for a study that will attempt to fill that gap.
Please include a title page with your name, student ID number, the title of the systematic review you have chosen and the word count.
Word limit should be no more than 500 words. For this task you may only need 3-6 references in addition to the systematic review to support your rationale for the research question proposed. Word count includes all sub- headings and in-text citations but does not include your reference list or title page. Any text exceeding 500 words will not be assessed.
Submission
Assignment 2, Part A is due via online submission to CloudDeakin by Monday 26 August 2024 at 8:00pm. Submission can be Word document or PDF. PDF conversion software is available here on Deakin Software Catalogue.
Unit staff will provide feedback on your summary and proposed aim, research question, and hypothesis via CloudDeakin within two weeks. The short turnaround period for feedback will allow sufficient time for you to incorporate any changes in Part B before submission is due.
Part B (total mark for this unit: 30%)
Your second task will be to develop a research proposal to answer your research question, taking into consideration the feedback provided by unit staff. You will need to select the most appropriate research design and methodology that would best answer your research question. You should provide a strong rationale for your choices (citing evidence as required) for all aspects of your proposal.
Your research proposal should include the following:
- Brief rationale for the study
- Aim, research question, and hypothesis
- A paragraph reflecting on how the feedback on Part A was taken into consideration for the final research proposal
- Study design and data collection methods (including components such as participants, study type, data collection tools, major ethical considerations)
- Analytical approach (data analysis approach)
- Strengths and limitations of the proposed study
- Brief statement of the potential significance of the proposed research
Please include a title page with your name, student ID number, the title of the systematic review you have chosen and the word count.
Word length is 1,200 – 1,500 words maximum. Word count includes all sub- headings and in-text citations but does not include your reference list or title page. Any text exceeding 1,500 words will not be assessed.
