Purpose
This assessment task is designed to demonstrate students’ ability to:

- LO2 – Critically evaluate current research to identify gaps in the
literature (GA4, GA5, GA7, GA8, GA9)
Instructions: You will have chosen a research topic and developed a descriptive or exploratory
research question.
You will receive a template on Canvas to guide you in writing the literature review. You are also
strongly encouraged to complete Worksheet 1: Research Questions and Literature Review to assist
you in the planning and preparation stage.
After reviewing the literature, you will write up your findings in your review.
The literature review will need to include a minimum of 8 reputable academic sources on your
chosen topic. You are expected to undertake your own research and draw on these academic
sources in your literature review.
Appropriate academic sources include: - credible peer-reviewed sources such as journal articles, academic books, book chapters in
edited books, and government reports (i.e., grey literature). - newspapers or magazine articles and internet webpages are not appropriate sources for this
task. You should also avoid encyclopaedic entries and textbooks.
Using the template provided on Canvas, submit your work as a Microsoft Word document or PDF.
Students requiring additional support with their literature review are encouraged to contact the
unit coordinator. You can also get guidance and feedback on your draft by scheduling a consultation
with the Academic Skills Unit.
Return of assessment: In accordance with the Assessment Policy, assignments will be returned
within three weeks of submission or at least five calendar days before the next related assessment
task is due.
Extensions: Students requiring an extension of the due date and time for an assignment due to
personal circumstances or temporary illness that significantly hamper(s) their participation or
performance in an assessment task can now apply for a 72-hour extension of time through Canvas:
Assignment Extensions. This should normally occur at least 24 hours before the due date and time.
Students who require a further extension of time will need to apply for Special Consideration. See
the Assessment Procedures policy here.
