Introduction

There is a registered nurse named Katie who is responsible for taking care of the patients in residential aged care. The colleagues of Katie are receiving complaints from the residents about Katie that when several shifts are ending she is not fulfilling her duties. The residents of aged care have complaints like urine bottles are not regularly emptied and the bed sheets which get wet are not changed in proper time. From the above scenario, it is understood that Katie is not providing proper care to the residents living in aged care. Therefore the colleagues of Katie had been responsible enough to raise all these issues with their manager. Now, it is the duty of the manager to take essential steps against Katie and remind her of the rules and the standard code of conduct in nursing practice.

‘Determination and examination of the issues faced by the residents in aged care and highlighting the faults of a registered nurse’. This is the following thesis statement addressed in the whole write-up.

Section A

The NMBA standard has a total number of seven standards in nursing practices. According to NMBS standards in nursing practice, the nurses should provide their patients a good, appropriate and responsive quality of care. According to Code of Ethics the nurses need to develop a plan to serve their patients more effectively. The nurses need to maintain their good quality of capability in their nursing practices. They should create a good bond of a professional and therapeutic relationship with the patients (Blogsutas, 2016). In nursing practices, they need to think very critically to handle tough decisions. The nurses need to conduct their assessments very extensively and effectively. To inform the nursing practice they need to evaluate their outcomes. From the above scenario, it is clearly seen that Katie is not able to meet any of the NMBS standards of nursing practice (Smith, 2020). She needs to take care of her patients by empty the urine bottles and change the wet bed sheets of the patients. She needs to be available all the time to serve her patients whenever required but she spends her maximum time at the nurses’ station. For registered nurses, it is very important to follow the rules and regulations of the NMBS standards to serve the patients more effectively and efficiently.

Katie is not able to form good person-centered and therapeutic relationships with the clients. She always spends her working time at the nurses’ station so she is not able to serve her patients. She needs to take care of her clients by giving medicines at a true-time, change their wet beds and empty their urine bottles. This helps to create a strong bond between the nurse and the patient. Katie does not provide proper care to the patient of the aged care and the residential patient. In result, neither Katie nor the patients can able to build a strong bond of trust and caring between them (Nursingmidwiferyboard, 2020). The person-centered relationship helps the patients to feel more confident and comfortable with the nurse. The therapeutic relationship could have helped Katie in improving the information-sharing power and developing effective communication with her patient. Katie might have understood her patient properly. It would have been beneficial for her if she had served the patients more effectively. She also needs to maintain ethical values during her nursing practices. She needs to maintain her dignity, precision, sympathy, commitment, accuracy in caring towards the clients (GMU, 2020). Moreover, she needs to provide more time for her aged clients so that they can live a better and comfortable life in aged care.

Katie can improve her person-center and therapeutic relationship with her clients by giving more time to them. She needs to serve the patient more effectively and efficiently by changing their wet bed sheets, empty their urine bottles, giving proper medications, and other vital tasks. She can collect their feedback on care and treatment. It can helps her to understand her mistakes and she can also able to improve her skills for future reference (PubMedCentral, 2013). She can improve her communication skills for building good bond with her patients. Increasing communication helps Katie to gain her patient’s trust. They can able to share their problems with Katie which further helps her to increase her caregiving skills. Increasing the person-centered bond with the patients can help Katie in improving the health outcomes to the old patients of the aged care center. It helps to heal faster and satisfy the aged patients easily (Hands for the sick, 2011). On the other hand, therapeutic relationships help to give patients the freedom to talk about the negative aspects of the nursing practices of the nurse. It helps Katie to improve her skills and do her job ethically and effectively.

Section B

Katie’s peers have done the right thing of reporting her conduct to the manager of the residential aged care. The peers of Katie are all registered nurses so it is their duty to take care of the daily necessities of every patient by administering medications, monitoring them, updating the records of patients, educating both the patient as well as the family members about the aged-care treatment and updating the records of the patients. Making a complaint was much required because being a nurse; Katie was not giving proper attention and care to the place and residents where her task was allocated. The other nurses have applied the code of conduct that illustrates the principles of maintaining professional behavior for guiding safe practice (Nursing midwifery board, 2018). Principle 4.1 (h) of the NMBA code of conduct suggests that nurses have full rights to address omission, indifference, disrespect, lack of care or disengagement to other people that might highlight under-involvement comprising mounting up the problem for ensuring the welfare and safety of the patient if required. Principle 2.1 of the conduct refers that nurses also have the right to produce evidence-oriented and person-centered decisions in order to deliver quality and safe care to the patients. The scenario shows that some of the residents in aged care are not satisfied with the treatment procedures of Katie. They are facing several issues in aged care due to a lack of proper service by the nurse they have been allocated to. The peers of Katie have followed all the nursing standards for being a responsible registered nurse (Mona, 2019). They have critically thought and analyzed the issue and then came to a solution by developing a plan of consulting the manager to resolve the issue. Standard number 1-7 of nursing practice has made them attain better outcomes by providing responsive quality to their patients.

The NMBA Code of Conduct for Nurses (2018) is now followed by all nurses in Australia. Legal requirements, conduct expectations and professional behavior are set out by the codes so that all nurses utilize it in their practice settings. These codes are vital for ensuring safe nursing and care to patients in residential aged care. According to principle 4.1 (h) of the conduct the colleagues of Katie have addressed the issues arriving from the residents and reflected the capabilities of Katie. The registered nurses will be able to observe the resources from the new codes of conduct and this will help them to apply it to their nursing practice (Nursing midwifery board, 2020). At present, the difficulties that the residents of aged care are facing like not changing the bedsheets and not emptying the urine bottles on a regular basis need to given proper attention and discussed with the nurse Katie. The manager of the organization needs to briefly discuss the NMBA Code of Conduct and the Registered Nurse Standards for Practice with Katie so that she is able to understand that she has failed in maintaining proper conduct that her residents needed. The standards and the code of conduct would help Katie and her manager to develop a performance plan that would enhance her caregiving practice comprising regular check-ups from now onwards. For working effectively Katie also needs to take the help of a health support service to resolve her personal problems (RN, 2020). Also, the registered nursing practice standards of 2016 will help Katie and the supervisor to accurately analyze the entire situation, collect pieces of evidence about the problem, comply with the guidelines and regulations of the standard, conduct assessments and develop suitable plans for resolving the current issue and maintaining quality care and safety to the residents of the health care organization in the near future.

Conclusion

This can be concluded from the above scenario that it is very important for a registered nurse to follow the rule as and regulations of the NMBA standards during the nursing practices. It helps them to serve the clients more efficiently. Apart from that, it is also essential for a registered nurse to create person-centered and therapeutic relationship with the patients. Communication plays a vital role in nursing practices. It helps them to improve the health outcomes of the clients and also improve the hospitality skills of the nurses. The Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (2016) and the NMBA Code of Conduct for Nurses (2018) helps Katie to improve her nursing practices towards the old patients of the aged care. Katie needs to build a strong bond with the patients to gain their trust which helps her to find out their problems and treat those easily.
