ASSESSMENT 3: Task Description
Overview
This project is a research report of the findings from data analyses, using the various techniques that we have been working on throughout the session.
What to submit: Using the questions provided below, write a research report in the following format: Introduction, Methods (amended from assessment 2), Results, Discussion, and References.
Length: 2200 -2500 (word count only applies to the text and does not include references, tables and figures, legends, or appendices)
Weighting: Assessment 3 will contribute 50% towards the final grade for the unit.
Date Due: 5:00pm on 1 Oct, 2021.
Referencing: Any work and ideas that you use that are not your own need to be attributed to the source, and cited using the APA 7 formatting style guide.
The data: The data is the fomo data that we have been using in tutorials and assessment 2. It will be available in the assessment 3 folder.
The Task
This assessment involves two major stages:
- Analyse the data to answer the research questions, and;
- Presenting the findings in a format consistent with a scientific research report.
Information on how to conduct these analyses using SPSS have been provided in tutorials 5 – 10. Report the answers using paragraph format in the Results section of your report. You should already have most of the Methods section and the first part of the Results section from Assessment 2. Using this same document, incorporate any feedback from Assessment 2, then expand the report to include the Assessment 3 research questions.
Step 1: The research questions
1. What is the percentage of students who are experiencing FOMO?
Hint: This should be the same as Assessment 2, unless otherwise indicated in your feedback.
2. Is the percentage of students who are experiencing FOMO related to age group?
Hint: Use the chi-square test
3. Is there a significant difference in mean wellbeing scores between those who are experiencing FOMO compared with those who are not?
Hint: Use a t-test
4. Is FOMO correlated with stress?
Hint: Use a correlation test with FOMO Total and DASS-Stress Total
STEP 2: Write up the results as a scientific research report
To format your findings as a scientific report, structure the report using the following headings (known as IMRD): Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, and References. As instructed above, you should use the Assessment 2 report and expand upon it.
1. The research report
Introduction (1 – 3 short paragraphs)
- Introduce and define the topic area. Do not include an exhaustive review of the literature, but include at least one reference to help to define each important concept being researched (e.g. stress, wellbeing and FOMO)
- Explain why this research has merit. Think about the potential significance of the current study – what could this study contribute (to knowledge and/or practice)?
- State an overarching aim of the research.
Methods
- Include the amended version of your methods section, after incorporating the feedback received from Assessment 2.
Results
- Present the findings from each research question, one at a time.
- Use paragraph format throughout the report, including the results section
- Consider using subheadings to help to structure the results section.
- Resist the temptation to interpret the meaning of the analyses in the results section; you will do this in the Discussion section.
- Tables and figures in Assessment 3: There is no strict requirement of how tables and figures should be used in Assessment 3. However, marks are allocated to appropriate use of tables and figures in the marking rubric. The general rule is to include a table or figure when it will make the report clearer and/or more succinct. Consider the reader’s perspective when deciding whether or not to include a figure or table: does it aid the communication of the results? Every table/figure must be referred to in the narrative of text in the results section.
Discussion
- Begin by stating the main findings of this study – i.e. the answers to the research questions (do not include the statistics here, just the interpretations).
- Link to other literature – i.e. compare and contrast these findings to previous research (e.g. how do these findings match up with the literature cited in the introduction?).
- Consider the strengths and limitations of how the study was conducted
- Speculate on potential implications for practice or future research
- Conclusion – provide a very short summary of the answer to the research question, along with any major limitation that should be kept in mind when translating this research into practice.
- Overall tip – besides some speculation about the recommendations for future research and the implications for practice, keep the discussion section focussed on what has been directly investigated in this study.
