Unit title & codeBHS013-6
Assignment number and titleAssignment 2: Practical Portfolio
Assignment typeWritten practical report
Weighting of assignment30%
Size or length of assessment2500 words
Unit learning outcomesThis practical report assessment principally assesses core learning outcomes 1 and 2: Relation to the Unit Learning Outcomes The first core learning outcome requires that on completion of the unit you should be able to demonstrate a systematic understanding of measurement techniques in the biotechnology context.   The second core learning outcome requires you to recognise and use professional standards for reporting laboratory data.
What am I required to do in this assignment?
Brief Description of Assessment Task Assignment 2 requires you to analyse and present laboratory analytical data and write a formal structured report according to peer-reviewed research standard.   In this case you will prepare a formal report of the Yeast Fermentation Practical of both the spectrophotometry manual practical and the yeast fermentation manual practical based on provided laboratory data.
What do I need to do to pass? (Threshold Expectations from UIF)
Appropriately analyse and present laboratory data and understand the meaning of analysed data.Present a formal written report of the work according to expectations described in the assignment brief.
How do I produce high quality work that merits a good grade?
Outline of Laboratory Report The report must contain at the top of the first page: your student number, the unit code and assignment number, and the word count (excluding references). The main body of the report should contain the following: Short descriptive titleIntroduction Background theory that links the laboratory work with the science that underpins the measurements; and an explicit statement of the aim(s) and objective(s) of the work done. Methods Brief summary of the various aspects of the work done. This must be written in the past tense. Do NOT reproduce the protocol; rather you should outline in a few lines what was done at each stage of the work. Results Section must start with extensive text that describes the results that follow: calibration data and glucose concentration changes (test and control). Discussion Discussion of the meaning of your results and explicit consideration of whether or not the aims and objectives were achieved. References List that contains the full information for each of the citations within your text. The reference list must only contain sources that have been cited appropriately in the main text using correct format, e.g. (Lanigan, 2011). Instructions for formatting the references can be found here: https://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/ data/assets/pdf_file/0009/557568/UoBHarvard17_18.pdf Appendix Electronic scanned copies (NOT photographs NOR images scanned using a mobile phone) of the original signed result sheets for both the spectrophotometry and yeast fermentation practicals. NOTE The word limit is NOT a target for the required number of words. A shorter, well written report is likely to attract a higher grade than a longer report containing an unnecessarily large number of words. Submission: The completed report should include your student number, unit code and assessment number, and should be submitted via BREO. Failure to submit your report by the deadline, without approval from the mitigation team will result in a FAIL grade.
How does this assignment relate to what we are doing in scheduled sessions?
The assessment report will document the findings of the yeast fermentation practical experiment manual and communicate their significance. The assessment will provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the development of modern biosensor approaches covered in the relevant lectures of the unit.
How will my assignment be marked?
Your assignment will be marked according to the threshold expectations and the criteria on the following page. You can use them to evaluate your own work and consider your grade before you submit.
 Pass – 40-49%Pass – 50-59%Commendation – 60-69%Distinction– 70%+
