Famine in India and colonialism
During the period of colonialism, root causes of famine within India include government policies, population imbalance, crop failure, inflation and war. Increased mortality, epidemic, starvation and regional malnutrition follow and accompany famine within the country. It has been recognized by few commentators that the inaction taken by the British acts as a vital factor to famines’ seriousness during the Indian time. A considerable rise in world population as well as enhancing living standards and altering consumptions patterns have highly contributed to the water crisis. Irrigated agriculture has been expanded in India. There has also been a rise in the food supply per capita as populations in India have developed (UN Org, 2022). This is mainly because of increasing yields. The population in India has increased largely and it has been fulfilled by a greater rise in yields of food supply. Famine mortality is seen to be established from aggregate supply of food which is insufficient for a single person. Besides this, a motivational factor for famine during this colonialism period is found to be a potential alteration from various food crops and transforming to various cash crops. Agriculture commercialization has assisted the alteration to market driven agriculture from subsistence farming. This process formed the path for enhancing rural households’ nutritional status and improving food security.
India’s handicraft industry
The handicraft industry all over India takes an essential and significant part in the economy of the country. Employment is provided by it to a broad craft individual segment within semi-urban and rural areas. The country also contains the capability for generating significant foreign exchange as well as storing its extraordinary cultural heritage. Evidence has been provided that India’s handicraft sector forms the basis of its rural economy.
The revolution of the industry has helped the merchants of English accumulate lots of money from countries such as America, Asia, and Africa. They are ready to invest this capital to set up trade and industry with India. Huge good production with the help of machines which is seen today has been introduced through the revolution of an industry that happened in England. This has led to a large increment in the output of finished products. The company of East India has helped financially and also has expanded the base of the industry. The textile of India like linen, woollen, silk and cotton goods is already acquiring a huge market in Africa as well as in Asia.
India’s dependence on big countries for economic assistance
By doing private consumption domestically, India has been successful in deriving 70% of its GDP. It is also identified as the sixth biggest customer market in the entire world. Besides doing private consumption, exports, investment and government spending have also fuelled the GDP of India. India has to depend on various countries because of precious stones, oil, organic chemicals, plastics, vegetable and animal oil, steel and iron (Blakemore, 2019).
Problems India is still facing due to past colonial rule.
Still now, India is being exposed to past colonial rule because of potential issues like malnutrition, poverty, economic exploitation, cultural upheaval, systematic programs and political limitations having the objective to create racial and social inferiority. Indian people have to deal with economic inequality and this is the reason for malnutrition. They are having low economic status and their diet misses both quantity and quality.
