PeaceMed LTD is a pharmaceutical mid-size company with specialisation on drug and vaccine manufacturing. PeaceMed is a global manufacturing company with headquarters in the US and subsidiaries in Ireland, the UK and in Germany. The company is organised in a top-down functional style like most traditional companies. This means that it has a hierarchical arrangement consisting of top-level board of directors, senior management and middle managers including head of departments.
Structurally, the company is divided into departments, like marketing, IT, human resources, drug discovery, vaccine discovery, drug distribution, and operations. This industry is highly regulated and is subject to a variety of laws that govern the patenting, testing, safety, efficacy and marketing of drugs. Every procedure in the company follows specific policies and standard. There is a clear chain of command with regards to decision making. Each department has specific functions and responsibilities it contributes to the company. There is an existence of formal communication and handoff procedures between different engineering/research teams working on given projects.
PeaceMed has been developing drugs and vaccines for many years. It has developed many drugs among them are three widely used medications against common cold. The company tends to focus primarily on optimising the production and marketing of developed drugs to achieve proficiency. Presently, there is little or no interest in researching new development methods. PeaceMed has a good market share and steady positive revenue. The company is profitable with a yearly income of about 30 million Euro. However, the CEO has noticed stagnant revenue recently and has realised the need to improve the speed and method of their development to remain competitive. The CEO has heard of cloud computing and its advantages and has instructed the development and operation departments to adopt cloud to aid their development process.
The company signed a contract with AWS and moved their data storage to AWS cloud. This improved the data analytic aspect of their drug development process and as well brought them a 10% cost reduction. However, its effect in the overall operation was minimal. Presently, their total development and operation cost is running at roughly 20 million euro per year. The CEO is not pleased with this cost and is looking to reduce it by roughly 70% and to speed up their developments to achieve shorter intervals between product release. The company invest heavily in purchasing compute infrastructure to support their developments, productions and operations. Some of the development teams employ Scrum in their development but the overall company process overshadows the gain from Scrum.
The Tech manager has heard of cloud native technologies at some conferences and its competitive advantages in the drug manufacturing industry, especially, regarding cost reduction and improving speed. The manager is eager to evolve the company developments and operation platforms to use cloud native approaches. The Tech manager has presented this concept to the board of directors and the CEO. There was a strong interest to undertake this transformation. The Tech manager however, does not have much knowledge and understanding of cloud native technologies. So the company is looking out for a suitable personal to lead this initiative.
With the outbreak of Coronavirus (Covid-19) and the frantic effort to develop vaccines quickly, the company was outpaced by its competitors, which are using modern development methods, and their market share was greatly wiped out.
