Task: individual report  Tesla

A major company and industry will be identified at the beginning of the lecture series.

You will write an individual report on the identified company as follows: 


1. Conduct a PESTLE analysis of critical factors which impact the macro-environment of the identified industry. Specify for which region/area/category your analysis is intended to be relevant.

2. Construct a high-level portfolio management cycle for the identified company and use this cycle to:

  1. Clarify how the strategic objectives of the identified company may or may not respond to the impact factors you identified in (1).
  2. Categorise the current and planned main change initiatives of the identified company.
  3. Rank two major programmes (past, present or future) of the identified company according to their achievability, then provide a high-level business case for these programmes – to include programme benefits, costs, duration and risks.
  4. Briefly assess how effectively the identified company communicates its strategic plan – and the intended benefits of this plan – to shareholders.
  5. Critically analyse how innovation may or may not support the identified company in achieving its portfolio of change initiatives.

Report length, structure

Length: between 3,450 and 3,500 words excluding title, contents, figures, references, appendices.

Structure:

  • Title page with student number (do not include student name).
  • Executive summary (an introduction is not required).
  • Section 1.
  • Section 2(a)-(e).
  • Conclusion.
  • List of references.
  • (Appendices if required).
  • Use section headings, sub-headings and page numbers throughout.

You are encouraged to:

  • Apply relevant models/frameworks from portfolio management and programme management.
  • Create tables, graphs, diagrams, figures etc. to support your analysis.
  • Use reliable, up-to-date secondary research from industry and academia.

Weightage

100% of overall module mark. 

Referencing

  • Referencing is required to give intellectual credit to your source; to help your reader recover your source easily; and to avoid being accused of plagiarism.
  • You should reference all sources using APA 7th Edition – see guidance
  • Reference should be made to the primary source, except when the primary source can no longer be obtained.
  • Unsatisfactory referencing will result in a loss of marks.

Submission

  • Submit a single .pdf or .docx document with your student number on the title page.
  • Use your student number as the file name e.g. “123456_MPP.pdf”
  • Submit to Moodle / Turnitin according to the Due dates above. 

Plagiarism

You are reminded of the need to avoid plagiarism, described by the University Regulations as:

the incorporation by a student in work for assessment of material which is not their own, in the sense that all or a substantial part of the work has been copied without any adequate attempt at attribution, or has been incorporated as if it were the student’s own when in fact it is wholly or substantially the work of another person or persons.

Any student(s) suspected of plagiarism will be referred to an Academic Misconduct Hearing. Students should ensure that all sources are fully cited in the bibliography (List of References) and that quotation marks (as appropriate) are used when quoting.

Marks will be awarded in accordance with the University’s General Grade Criteria for Level 7:

≥70%

  • Excellent work – able to express an original, reasoned argument in a lucid manner by reviewing and critiquing a wide range of material. 
  • Original critical thinking based on outstanding insight, knowledge and understanding of theory. 
  • Material contributes to current understanding and is of potentially publishable quality in terms of presentation and content.
  • Wide reaching research showing breadth and depth of sources. 

60-69%

  • Clear, balanced, coherent, critical, rigorous analysis of the subject matter.
  • Detailed understanding of knowledge and theory expressed with clarity.
  • Extensive use of relevant & current literature to view topic in perspective, analyse context and develop new explanations and theories.

50-59%

  • Detailed review and grasp of pertinent issues; a critical contextual overview of the literature.
  • Thorough knowledge of theory and methods. Uses this to underpin arguments and conclusions.
  • Confidence in understanding and using literature.

40-49%

  • Demonstrates grasp of key concepts and an ability to develop and support an argument in a predominately descriptive way with valid conclusions drawn from the research.
  • Familiarity with key literature, which is cited and presented according to convention.
  • Logical and clear structure, well-organised with good use of language and supporting material.

<40% (FAIL)

  • Some knowledge of relevant concepts and literature but significant gaps in understanding and/or knowledge.
  • Little attempt at evaluation, conclusions vague, ambiguous and not based on researched material.
  • Limited or inappropriate research.
  • Deficits in length, structure, presentation and/or prose.
