The instructions in RED are the ones which are mark-bearing and need to be answered as part of the assignment. The instructions in BLACK tell you how to carry out the simulation
Diffusion simulation:
- Open the website biologysimulations.com/diffusion-osmosis
- Set the parameters: Side A you want 5 small molecules and zero of the other molecules.
- Side B you want zero for all molecules.
- Set the temperature to 10 degrees.
- Click on “run simulation”
- Record the time taken to reach equilibrium
- Increase the temperature to 20,30,40,50 degrees and repeat. Do each temperature 3 times.
- Fill the table below [5 marks]
Results table
Use Excel to calculate the mean and standard deviation. The functions are AVERGAGE and STDEV
Temperature (degrees Celsius) | Time taken to reach equilibrium (s) 1st trial | Time taken to reach equilibrium (s) 2nd trial | Time taken to reach equilibrium (s) 3rd trial | Mean time (s) | Standard deviation |

- Using Excel, plot a line graph of your results (including standard deviations) and paste it here. Do not forget to label axes and use the correct units [5 marks]
- What do these results tell you about the effect of temperature on diffusion rate? [5 marks]
- What is the mechanism by which this occurs (use the words kinetic energy in your answer) [5 marks]
Enzyme simulation:
- Go to the simulation page:
biologysimulations.com/enzymes
- Your goal is to convert 5 molecules of starch into glucose at two temperatures: 25 degrees and 50 degrees.
- After 30 seconds, take screen shots of your simulations and paste them here: [10 marks]
- Why were two different enzymes needed for this process? [5 marks]
- Why did one of the simulations produce no glucose? [5 marks]
- What do you think would happen if you ran the simulation at zero degrees? [5 marks]
Total marks=50
