Instructions to StudentGeneral Instructions The purpose of this assessment is to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to research some of the current issues and dilemmas, current trends and significant historical stages in the Libraries and Information Industries. To demonstrate you can share information about key issues and trends, and emerging technologies to relevant stakeholders you will take part in the Discussion Forum in our electronic Learning Management System Connect to discuss your findings with colleagues and will conduct one short verbal discussion with a colleague or other person. You are required to submit a portfolio of research into two topics, one chosen from each of the categories listed in the task detailed instructions, including: Using a range of research tools to locate appropriate and applicable information to address the topics;Composing a short summary explaining what you found out about the topic and including your own opinions; submit each summary into the applicable thread in the Discussion Board AND copy and paste your summaries into the spaces provided in this portfolio;respond to two other students posts, one in each category, adding to their summary with related comments of your own AND copy and paste your responses into the spaces provided in this portfolio, and;conducting a short discussion of one topic or aspect with a colleague or other person. This task requires you to demonstrate practical and communication skills which need to be observed by your Assessor. These skills and activities can be demonstrated in any one of three ways: in classin online roomsvideo recorded Role Play: The tasks can be role played by a colleague, classmate or other person that can interact and respond accordingly. Refer to Task Instructions for detailed information on what is required to be role played.   Video Streaming / Recording: You are required to confirm your identity at the commencement of the video by displaying your photo ID and confirming your name and student ID number. For video recording you are also required to gain consent from any participant who is NOT a TAFE Queensland student. Consent may be obtained by either: Reading aloud the below Video Recording Statement at the commencement of the video and asking all participants to respond verbally; or Using the Participant Consent Form provided. NOTE: For participants under the age of 18 years or where children are present in a recording, consent may only be obtained by using the Participant Consent Form, which must be signed by their parent or legal guardian.   Video Recording Statement: My name is (insert student name and number and display Photo ID). Assessors are to:   confirm expectations as detailed in ‘Instructions to Student’ have been followed and metprovide feedback on all assessment attempts and identify additional learning and/or practice required by the student before their second attempt.   use the Benchmark Answers and Marking Criteria to record their assessment and feedback.   negotiate to complete assessment tasks and/or resubmissions verbally, where the opportunity presents:   scribe the student’s response verbatim on the assessment task/marking criteria, and note the questions verbally addressed on the coversheet.   initial and date additional comments   Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Detailed Instructions:

  1. Research the topic given using a range of sources. These sources will include information found using the TAFE Queensland library website; internet and databases; peer reviewed articles such as on LISTA, Academic Search Complete, Australian and New Zealand Reference Centre (ANZRC); readings and podcast provided on Connect. Note that you must research and post on the first topic before moving on to research the second topic.
  2. Post a short summary including your own opinions, plus at least two (2) references (using APA style of referencing), for each topic under the appropriate Thread in the Discussion Board. Copy and paste your posts into the section provided below.
  3. Historical development, emerging issues, trends and / or emerging technologies.
  4. Impact on current library practices and on library staff
  • Make at least two (2) substantial responses on someone else’s posts (not the same one repeated) for each topic. Your two responses must be a response to each of the different categories, one response to “Historical development, emerging issues, trends and/or emerging technologies” and one response on “Impact on current library practices and on library staff”.

You may post additional replies to the above minimums.

For one (1) of your response posts, interview one other person for their opinions on the topic. Include details of the questions and the responses into your comment post. The person you interview could be another student, a colleague in a library, staff in a library, family or friends.

Post your answer on the Discussion Forum thread under each topic.

Now that you have completed some background reading and listening into emerging issues, trends, and emerging technologies,outline some significant historical development in the library industry, and identify and discuss related major library trends, issues and technology developments.

Select one topic from the list below to research and discuss:

  • Historical development of libraries
  • Libraries as a “place” in the community
  • Library’s role in literacy & reading, may include historical development in the community
  • Trend to e-resources across libraries and Information Organisations
  • Collaboration or convergence between libraries and wider Information Organisations
  • Community engagement and the implementation of creative and / or community spaces in libraries e.g. Makerspaces

Log onto CONNECT and in the Discussion Forum, under the thread (heading) “Emerging Issues, Trends, and/or Emerging Technologies”, share your research and thoughts with your fellow students. Also make a response to another student’s post.

Topic 2. Impact on current library practices and on library staff

Follow on from topic one (1), now discuss the impact and opportunities you think it/they will have or are having on libraries, that is, whether this change has an impact on current library practices and on library staff.

Select one topic from the list below to research and discuss:

  • Significant advances in technology and increasing costs of journals and other print resources – massive growth in electronic services
  • Open Access – its merits, issues and application
  • Security of digital information in library industries (malware/ viruses etc.)
  • Application of current and emerging technologies in libraries eBooks, tablets, digital technologies
  • Budgetary manoeuvres – eg staffing pared down to essential levels so that infrastructure services may be developed
  • Decreasing numbers of library visitors. Reduced coverage of service points, sustaining basic services whilst offering extended electronic access
  • Outsourcing – argument for a more cost effective system
