| Essential Questions: What is the Divine Command Theory? -Having divine in the name shows that this theory is based on a higher power when it comes to actions doing what is right in the mind of god is what is moral. But if we do what god does not command we are doing the wrong no matter if the consequences are little. We can find god’s commands in 2 different areas, one in sacred scriptures like the bible or we can find it in human nature. -Problems with the Divine Command Theory: All religions have different inturbrations of the scriptures when they are dealing with something like god. Are actions right because god commands them or are actions right so god commands them? Plato’s thinking. What is the Natural Law Ethics? This is the idea that we should be living as the earth was natural that god built the earth the way it was. This also causes the ‘gut feeling’ like how we desire a feeling of goodness and reject something that is bad for us. It relates to god as the belief that god created human nature so following that is following god’s work. This becomes an issue when we desire things that we know are bad much like smoking or drinking alcohol. It also goes against a lot of sexual activity other than straight sex because anything else would be ‘unatural’ also if it does not result in pegnacy. What is Kant’s Categorical Imperative? -He was very religious but rejected the divine command theory -A proper theory of ethics should respect the freedom to choose unlike the divine theory and a utilitarian theory. -He has a theory of a good will to have a good will is to do good and moral actions without any other reason except it is a good action. – The categorical imperative has 2 aspects: one that we shouldn’t do anything unless it is possible for everyone to do the same thing and I am willing for everyone to do the same thing to me. -This gives me a little bit of a utilatism idea just based on the fact that it evolves everyone. -He believed religion and morality are 2 different things that shouldn’t mix. – Morality is constant while religion changes things, He focuses on desires to build on actions for us to do.
