Assessment Task 2: Optical ethernet transmission project
Task summary
The assessment tasks in this unit require students to work with a client to review and test their current technical environment and then to test the ethernet optical transmissions following a system improvement.
This assessment is to be completed in the simulated work environment in the RTO.
Required
- Access to textbooks and other learning materials
- Computer with Microsoft Office and internet access
- System Report Template
- Test Results Template
- WHS Policy and Procedures
- Safety equipment/signage
- Test equipment
- Manufacturer’s instructions relating to test equipment
- Access to legislation, codes and standards such as at:
Timing
Advise the student of the due date of these submissions.
Submit
- System Report
- Test Results Report
Assessment criteria
Students must complete all of the activities listed and will be assessed against the assessment criteria included in the checklist included with this task.
Re-submission opportunities
If a student submits work that is not satisfactory, the assessor will provide written feedback explaining why, as well as timelines for resubmission.
Assessment Task 2 Instructions as provided to students
Complete the following activities:
You will complete this activity within your RTO. Assume that you are visiting the office of a small business that houses a small number of computers connected to a router. Your assessor will ensure the environment is set up accordingly.
You will participate in a meeting with the client (your assessor) to find out information about the current technical environment and network components network, as well as conduct a physical inspection and testing of the system yourself.
You will use this information to report on the systems and issues, including recommending architecture to resolve the client’s system issues.
Prior to commencing this assessment, you are to review the WHS Policy and Procedures provided to you. During this assessment, you will be required to follow these requirements at all times and your assessor will ask you questions and watch you perform activities to demonstrate your understanding.
Complete the following activities:
- Conduct a work site safety check
Review the worksite set up for this task. Point out the hazards to your assessor and describe at least two additional hazards that you may have to look out for on a work site.
Address the hazards you have identified using relevant risk control methods.
- Confirm the technical environment and network components.
The first part of this assessment requires you to meet with the client (your assessor) to discuss the existing technical environment and the associated network components.
At the meeting, you will need to:
- Sign in as per the site safety procedures.
- Confirm the existing technical environment and network components. You will do this by asking the client questions, as well as physically reviewing the environment.
- Identify issues with the system and client needs, including system performance requirements.
This should include testing current performance of the system and links using relevant testing equipment. You will need to work out what to test and how to test it. Select the correct testing equipment and explain what you are doing to your assessor (the client) as you carry out this activity.
During the worksite visit you should consider the architecture that may be required to resolve current issues.
During the meeting, you are required to demonstrate effective communication skills including:
- Speaking clearly and concisely
- Using non-verbal communication to assist with understanding
- Asking questions to identify required information
- Responding to questions as required
- Using active listening techniques to confirm understanding
- Develop a System Report.
Following the meeting you are to prepare a short report that includes:
- Details of the current technical environment and network components
- Issues with the system as per the information given to you and the tests you performed to check existing links.
- Client needs.
- The architecture that will be needed to ensure the system operates effectively and to meet client needs. Include a diagram to show the system you consider will work.
Use System Report Template to guide your work.
Submit your System Report to your assessor.
- Test optical ethernet link.
Assume that the architecture recommended by you in your system report has been adopted by the client and that you are now required to test the system.
Identify relevant testing tools for use for testing the system and plan what you will test.
Before you commence the test, advise your assessor of your plan.
Using relevant testing tools, conduct a test of the system. Your assessor will observe you completing the tests. Ensure you explain what you are doing as you complete this activity .
Document your test results in a Test Report. Your test report should include an analysis of the test results, including comparing results with expected outcomes.
Use Test Report Template to submit your work.
Submit your Test Report to your assessor.
