Task Summary

In this assessment you are required to research a new technology or innovation that has being used in the aged are sector (acute care hospital, community aged care or residential aged care) in Australia in the last five years, to improve the quality of life for older people and consider if there are any ethical implications for its use in this population. Research the topic and develop and deliver a 5 min (+/- 10%) oral presentation via zoom. This is an individual presentation.

Context

Continuing to develop services or products that improve the quality of life of older people or improve work efficiency of the health professionals that care for older people, is a key focus of every service organisation’s continuous quality improvement program. An innovation does not necessarily need to be an advancement in technology, but can by implementing new ideas, such as a new work process, a new product or service. The purpose of the innovation being that it changes, creates, or adds value to the service being provided or the recipients of that service (Doyle, 2018).

This assessment will help you to identify and apply evidence-based innovative approaches and technologies to the ageing population and consider the ethical implications of their use in the aged

care industry. This will assist you to develop an appreciation of the expanded role that nursing has in the development of new innovations to promote better health outcomes both for current and future populations. The assessment allows you to demonstrate your communication skills with your peers; these are necessary skills for you to practice in preparation for clinical practice.

Task Instructions

To complete this assessment task, you must…

  • Research the literature of the last five years (2014 – 2019) and identify one innovation or technology, that has been developed and implemented to

improve the delivery of care to older Australians or improve the life of older Australian in the aged care sector (community or residential aged care).

  • How does this innovation propose it will improve service delivery, care, or the quality of life of the older person population? In other words, why was this innovation developed?
  • Are there any ethical issues related to the use of this new innovation with older people, older people with dementia, and older people from LGBTQIA+, ATSI or CALD groups?
  • Identify whether this innovation has been supported by a clinical trial, research and/or a follow up evaluation of its effectiveness or ability to change outcomes and briefly present the aims and results of this research.
  • Provide an example of how you could implement this innovation? For example, how could a electronic tablet be used to monitor your patient, that has been admitted back to their own home in the first 48 hours post discharge

Suggested format.

  3. Target audience is a group of your peers e.g. a group of registered nurses, or nursing staff in an aged care facility or community setting (please identify on your front slide which type of audience).
  4. Do not overcrowd the slide with text. Keep to dot points and narrate. You can use pictures if that will assist your story.

    1. Slide one – Introductory slide where you introduce your topic, state who you are and who you are presenting the information to.
    1. Slide two – discuss the background to the innovation or new technology, what was the reason for the development of the new innovation and what was it proposed to be able to do.
  • Slide three – discuss any supporting evidence for its use and ability to change care outcomes or quality of life of older people? Are there any ethical issues that arise in relation to the innovation?
    • Slide four – explain how you propose implementing this innovation
    • Slide five – provide a summary slide to the presentation.
    • Slide six – reference list in APA format.
  • The presentation can be prepared on power point presentation but needs to be orally presented and narrated in a Zoom forum. The presentation should be recorded in zoom and then uploaded with a pdf version of the transcript included. Make sure your references are included in this file.
