Overview
Scope, time and cost are essential components of a project management plan.
Task Description
You will be considered to be part of a group of project managers working on a major project. In your respective role, you will be required to prepare the relevant documentation for the project general overview and goals, as well as scope, time and cost.
In order to do so, please read your selected project carefully and:
1. Develop a set of relevant and achievable goals appropriate to the project and explain how your goals will be measured as the project progresses.
2. Write a brief scope statement for the project. In your scope statement:
- Describe the processes and/or methods you used to determine the scope of the project
- Identify all key deliverables and milestones (What is the product or service intended to be delivered?)
- Include an acceptance criterion (How will you know that you have produced the intended product or service?)
3. Prepare a schedule for the case study project. In your schedule:
- Use the key milestones that you have previously identified.
- Include a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), network diagram and Gantt chart.
- Provide an overview of the project’s overall life cycle. This should describe the life cycle stages, methods and processes that will be used to monitor and control the project successfully through to completion
- Discuss the relative merits of the methods, tools and techniques used to develop the schedule.
4. Provide a cost management strategy. In your cost estimation:
- Explain the total cost estimate including the techniques used
- Include all items for total project cost, not just production costs
The PMP is expected to have sufficient amount of details (of approximately 1000 words, excluding appendices). The following items should specifically be included within the PMP:
- Executive Summary (1 page)
- Table of Contents (1 page)
- Project Charter (1 page)
- Sections covering the 4 points mentioned above
- References
Particular attention should be paid to the use of:
- Appropriate graphics and tables
- Appropriate use of dot points
- Clear and concise language
- Consistency, such as consistent WBS activity names and codes, stakeholders, etc.
A Project Management Plan is not an essay but rather a professional industry report – as such it is not expected to be pages of text of long paragraphs and a conclusion is not needed.
Appendices may be used for information that is overly lengthy. These are items that provide an extra level of detail and are still relevant to the project, but are so lengthy that they would ruin the flow of the main document.
