In this assessment, students are to build from Assessment 1 and write a paper based on one of the
thematic areas explored, namely:
• Feminist Activism Online
• Disability Rights Activism Online
• LGBTQI+ Rights Activism Online
• Environmental Activism Online
• Migrant Rights Activism Online
• Ethnic/Culture/Race Rights Activism Online (selected)
Furthering the presentations presented in Week 6, each student will write a paper that carries out a full inquiry into a social media campaign of their choice (NB: this can be the campaign that they presented about in class, or another campaign that they choose to look into). The paper must clearly state important issues to include the following:
• The background and context of the campaign (how the campaign began and grew) and how it relates to the thematic area explored.
• The theoretical framework to be used to interrogate the campaign further (please use a maximum of two theories of your choice, briefly outlining each theory and why you have selected them).
• Key themes and issues raised by the campaign, and any solidarity or cross-movement building opportunities created with other campaigns.

a. Articulate an understanding of social media as a space for expression,
solidarity and activism.
b. Demonstrate an understanding of the political economy of digital and social
media companies.
c. Use theory to look at specific digital and social media moments/
movements/ platforms.
d. Demonstrate a global understanding of the various challenges and
opportunities for social media for activism and advocacy.
e. Demonstrate practice skills linked to theories discussed, such as
relationship work, problem exploration, the process of assessment,
networking, and advocacy.
Length 2,200 words
• Key statistics and figures of the campaign’s reach and audience, as well year/s the campaign
was/ is active and its duration.
• Key discussions and debates about the campaign (making sure to look at successes, failures
and learning points).
• Personal analysis and reflection on the campaign and how you believe it could have been
better, if at all.
• Analysis and reflection of how this campaign, and others like it, may be useful as case
material/ case studies for social workers who may want to use social media in a similar
context.
