Sam is 17 years old and has been drinking alcohol for the last three years. Having been suspended from school at 15 years of age, Sam did not return to education and has been unemployed since ‘officially’ leaving school. Recently Sam has become bored and has started hanging around with a group of older youths who are involved in offending and who drink every day.
Sam’s parents have become increasingly concerned about him and are now at their wits’ end because Sam has been charged with:

- Breach of the peace
- Possession of cannabis
- Burglary
In relation to the burglary, Sam and his friends broke into the home of a 25 year old girl who was alone, asleep, at the time.
This exercise is to assist you to critically self reflect and practice perspective taking, So – for example:
- Think about Sam – what do you think of him and his behaviour? What is your interpretation of his behaviour? What is happening for him? What informs your ideas?
- What about Sam’s parents? What do you think is happening for them? How might they be feeling? What do you think of their situation with Sam?
- The purpose of this exercise is for you to explore your own values and attitudes in relation to this case so be mindful to explore any assumptions you make or values you are communicating in relation to the case (i.e. attitudes about offending, drug use, parenting, etc.).
- What else do you think you might need if you were working with Sam? What knowledge might be important – reflect on the lecture. What values might you need to adapt? What skills would you need to work effectively with Sam and his parents?
