In economics, the meanings of the words ‘growth’ and ‘development’ are completely different. In practical life, people may use both words simultaneously, but to economists, they are completely different. The word growth or economic growth refers to only growth in numerical values like GDP (gross domestic product), PCI (per capita income), and national income. Economic growth has no regard for other parameters of life like respect, equality, welfare, or the distribution of income. Several surveys and reports or different organizations like the WDR (World Development Report) by World Bank and the HDR (Human Development Report) by the UNDP are used to rank the countries on their development rate internationally.

All these surveys are conducted with the goal of measuring or ranking all the countries on the basis of Economic growth and development. If a country ranks high in a survey, it does not mean that the whole country is developed fully.

Difference Between Rural and Urban Areas

As mentioned above, the economic development of a country may be high when compared to the other countries of the world just because of the difference in population and size of the area.

The country itself may be well developed and may be on track with current technologies in a particular area. These types of areas which are well developed on the basis of education, technology and medical facilities are commonly called urban areas. On the other hand, areas which still tend to be behind the current trend of technology and which are the comparatively less developed areas of the country are called the rural areas.

Rural areas refer to villages, gram panchayat etc where development is comparatively slow. The urban areas consist of towns and big cities. In this kind of area, the rate or speed of development is comparatively high. The urban areas may have greater medical facilities which have resulted in the majority of people moving from rural areas to urban areas mainly due to convenience. This is generally called as migration of people from rural areas to urban areas.

Development in Urban Areas

As mentioned above, the development rate of urban areas is much higher than the development rate of rural areas. This is mainly due to the difference in occupation of people in both rural and urban areas. The people of urban areas often take up professions like engineering, architecture, becoming a doctor etc. The people of urban areas often depend on technology for their livelihood whereas people of rural areas still stick to the traditional methods of everything. The jobs of people in the village are often agriculture or agriculture-related activities.

Farmers who live mostly in rural areas in order to get the benefit of the fertile soil of that area. They still insist to use traditional methods of farming and natural pesticides. These are of high cost which results in a lower profit for the farmer after selling the crops. The people of urban areas do the complete opposite to get more profit which results in a higher development rate.

The educational system of urban areas focuses more on technology and its advancements. The schools in rural areas are lesser in number and are not that advanced yet. This can be changed by the cooperation of the people of the areas and by creating a proper plan for development.
