The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals or SDG or just Global Goals are a series of seventeen goals created by the United Nations General Assembly as a “blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all”. They were all created in 2015 with the objective of being achieved by 2030. When are These Goals Expected to Be Completed?
The year by which the targets are meant to be achieved vary from 2020 all the way 2030. Some of the goals have no given target date.
The Work to Be Done on Each Goal
Goal 1 – This goal has seven targets and thirteen indicators to measure its progress. The end goals for this one is eradication of extreme poverty, reduction of poverty by half, implementation of social measures to prevent poverty and build an environment that is resilient to economic and social disasters.
Goal 2 – This goal has four targets and fourteen indicators to measure its progress. The end goals for this one is ending worldwide hunger and improving access to food for everyone, building sustainable food infrastructure and improving genetic quality of foods and domesticated animals.
Goals 3 – This one has thirteen targets and twenty-eight indicators to measure its progress. The end goals for this one is to ensure reduction in maternal mortality and eradicating all preventable causes of deaths under the age of five. Besides action must be taken to ensure a decline in road accidents and substance abuse
Goal 4 – This one has ten targets and eleven indicators. The end goals for this one is to ensure free primary and secondary education, provide equal access to children attending pre school and make tertiary education affordable.
Goal 5 – This one has been created to ensure that women and girls are treated equally and receive equal pay at the workplace. This would empower women.
Goal 6 – This one has eight targets and eleven indicators. The end goals are to ensure that people get access to safe water, end open defecation, and increase water efficiency.
Goal 7 – This one has five targets and six indicators. The end goals for this are to improve access to modern forms of energy, increase the share of renewable energy sources and increase their efficiency.
Goal 8 – This one has twelve targets to be achieved. Its end goal is to improve policies for job creation, provide economic growth that is sustainable and end modern slavery.
Goal 9 – This one has eight targets and twelve indicators. Its end goal is to develop suitable infrastructure, promote inclusiveness and improve access to financial resources.
Goal 10 – This one has ten targets. The end goals are to reduce income inequality, promote social and economic inclusion, ensure equal opportunities and end discrimination.
Goal 11 – This goal works on ensuring access to public transport, making slums safer and upgrading them. It also mentions on protecting cultural heritages.
Goal 12 – This one has eleven targets. The end goals of this one is too ensure sustainable extraction and consumption of resources, reducing wastage at all levels of the chain.
Goal 13 – This goal aims to work on improving climate related laws and integrating disaster response worldwide.
Goal 14 – This one has seven targets. They aim at reducing the acidification of water, improving the health of marine animals, and ensuring stronger laws on overfishing.
Goal 15 – This one has nine targets. They include preventing deforestation, ensuring proper use groundwater reserves, and ending desertification.
Goal 16 – This one has ten targets. They include ending human trafficking, ensuring justice for women and children, and ending violence towards them.
Goal 17 – This one has nineteen targets and twenty-four indicators. It aims to “Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development”. It also includes developing multi-stakeholder partnerships for knowledge, expertise, and technology.
