Module 2 – Project Task 1.8 – Energy Efficiency
Assessment Task:
You are a builder who is working with a client in relation to constructing their house. The contract documents have been signed and the site plans have been produced by a surveyor. The Project number for the project is PN. 33837.
Your client is from outside Australia and has an interest in thermo-efficiency and sustainability. They have asked you to produce a report that details the following information:
Use the templates provided to collate your findings and recommendations
Part A |
What do I need to do?
You are required to select a low-rise building to analyse. This could be your own home, the home of a friend or relative, a construction project you are working on (or have worked on before), or a commercial building less than 2000 squares i.e. family business with upstairs dwelling. This must be a building you have easy access to, and are able to photograph, measure, and study.
Energy Efficiency
Discuss the design of the dwelling to meet energy efficiency requirements in an email to the client.
- Explain (using chapter number) where the performance requirements are located in BCA 2019
- Detail the performance requirements or DtS Provisions for the building
Determine the relevant Australian Standards for the building (if applicable)
- Identify what has been included in the construction of the building to improve the energy efficiency of the dwelling including whether this meets the requirements of the NCC.
Research and identify a Thermal Efficiency designer/Certifier. Write an email requesting they review the building design and provide a Thermal Efficiency rating report for the project.
How will I be assessed for this task?
For this task you are required to submit the following:
- Completed email to the client discussing the design of the dwelling to meet energy efficiency
- Completed email requesting review
- Completed thermal efficiency rating report
- All documents must be typed and formatted
Part B |
What do I need to do?
You are now required to perform a face-to-face role-play (with one of your peers/classmates). Your assessor will split the class into groups of two (2) with each student having to play the role of builder and the client.
ROLES
Builder
- Explain the professional consultants and designers you may need to bring in to confirm your conclusions, and give a calculation of their daily rates of pay
- Ask if the client has any questions, and answer them to the best of your ability, using pertinent Standards and the BCA, in layman’s terms
- Ask if the client has any further requirements and negotiate regarding feasibility and cost implications
- Explain the life-cycle of each different thermal option
- Communicate clearly and answer all questions
- Communication must take into account any cultural differences
Client
- Ask questions regarding the professional consultants and query their daily rates of pay
- Ask for clarification on NCC standards
- Communicate clearly and answer all questions
- Communication must take into account any cultural differences
How will I be assessed for this task?
For this activity, your assessor will split the students up into groups of two and ensuring each student takes a turn in being the builder and the client. Each student needs to role play both roles and discuss above requirements.
The assessor will ask questions about information to seek the information from both students to determine each student’s knowledge of the topic.
The assessor will be observing your communications skills including questioning and providing answers to questions during the presentation as well as demonstrating skills in negotiation.
