This task requires you to apply your knowledge of the structure and function of the digestive tract and accessory organ secretions which assist the digestion of food as it moves along the length of the digestive tract.

Healthcare scenario

Sam is 16 years old and lives with cystic fibrosis, a multi-organ genetic condition that causes a build-up of thick, sticky mucus that blocks his pancreatic duct and airways in his lungs. 

Sam recently started Year 11 at College and went out for pizza with some new friends in his class. He felt self-conscious about taking one of his daily medications, Creon®, in front of his new friends so he didn’t take the first capsule that he should have when he started eating the pepperoni pizza (with extra cheese) or the second capsule near the end of the meal.

Later that night, Sam experienced uncomfortable abdominal bloating and loose, foul-smelling stools that appeared oily (this is called steatorrhoea). He regretted skipping the doses of his medication. 

Pepperoni pizza contains carbohydrates, proteins and fats

Explain what happened (and did not happen) to the pizza on its journey through Sam’s digestive tract and why his faeces were oily.

In your answer, you should synthesise information about mechanical digestion, chemical digestion of the major nutrients the pizza contained (including enzymes and other secretions involved) and absorption, and how the relevant processes are impacted by Sam’s life-long health condition.

You DO NOT need to include information about hormones or nerves that control secretion or motility of digestive system organs in your answer.

 Task Length: Up to 500 words  (+ 10% is allowed if needed)

Constructing your written response to the question:

  • Ensure that you express your writing in your own words to demonstrate your understanding of digestive processes. 
  • You should write in complete sentences and structure your answer into paragraphs. Please do not use bullet-point lists, tables, flow-charts or pictures to present your response. 
  • You should be able to answer this question based on your learning from the guided online content in Module 3: The Digestive System and active participation in Workshop C.
  • You do NOT need to reference MyLO content. However, if you use any other resources (e.g. the Amerman text or any other textbook, journal articles or websites) then you should reference the sources of information (both in-text and a reference list at the end of your answer) using the Harvard referencing style.
