Task Description
This assessment is designed to strengthen your understanding of flight planning and navigation in VFR conditions. To achieve this, you will need to:
- Use map along with computations learned throughout this course to plan a flight for weather forecast to given points and back to the starting point.
- Proficiency when using the CR3 computer.
- Integrate weather restrictions as well as environmental conditions into the flight plan.
- prepare the map with weather requirements and limitations.
- Demonstrate awareness of hazards
Learning Outcomes Assessed
- Understand the model of International Standard Atmosphere
- Demonstrate utilisation of atmospheric characteristics and how temperature, pressure and density vary with altitude.
- Apply the meteorological conditions to the planned flight.
- Identify features on the WAC map and display awareness of important features.
- Display accuracy in the calculation of the required information at the flight planning stage.

Flight Planning Information.
You plan to fly from Cairns airport to Chillagoe airport to Innisfail airport returning to Cairns airport during daylight hours on any day in the month of Apr 2023. Choose your departure time. Please note that the choice of the date and time must be different for each student for this Assignment.
You are flying a Cessna 180 aircraft that performs best below 10,000 feet.
LEG 1 : Meteorological conditions for the 1st Leg from Cairns to Chillagoe are:
CAVOK throughout the first leg, Winds………… (find the wind direction and speed at your chosen
flight level as per forecast on the date of your flight); Given conditions for this exercise are: Area QNH 1009, temperature deviation ISA +4° for your selected altitude.
During the flight planning stage, you are required to calculate the following details (for LEG 1):
- Desired track true.
- Chosen Altitude to fly and Minimum Safe Altitude (MSA).
- Nominate two important geophysical features en-route.
- Drift angle.
- Heading true.
- Heading magnetic.
- Groundspeed.
- Estimated time interval Cairns – Mareeba
- Estimated relative magnetic bearing to Mareeba when Mareeba is abeam to your track (true).
- Time interval.
- EoD.
- Planned departure time UTC.
LEG 2: Meteorological conditions for the 2nd leg from Chillagoe to Innisfail are:
CAVOK throughout the second leg, Winds………… (find the wind direction and speed at your
chosen flight level as per forecast on the date of your flight); Given conditions for this exercise are: Area QNH 1007, (OAT) temperature ISA -3° for your selected altitude.
During the flight planning stage calculate (for LEG 2):
- Chosen Altitude to fly and Minimum Safe Altitude (MSA).
- Actual Temperature of the selected altitude
- Pressure height at the selected altitude
- Desired track magnetic
- Heading magnetic
- Drift/Groundspeed
- Estimated time interval Chillagoe – Herberton
- Assuming you depart Chillagoe at 1422K, calculate ETA Innisfail UTC
LEG 3: Meteorological conditions for the 3rd leg from Innisfail to Cairns are:
CAVOK throughout the third leg, Winds………… (find the wind direction and speed at your chosen
flight level as per forecast on the date of your flight); Given conditions for this exercise are: Area QNH 1010, (OAT) temperature -2°C for your selected altitude.
During the flight planning stage calculate (for LEG 3):
- ISA temperature at selected altitude
- Nominate an important geophysical feature en-route.
- Desired track true
- Desired track magnetic
- Heading magnetic
- Heading true
- Drift/groundspeed
- Estimated time interval Innisfail – Gordonvale.
- Chosen Altitude to fly and Minimum Safe Altitude (MSA).
- Using the previously estimated ETA Innisfail as departure time Innisfail, ETA Cairns UTC and AEST.
SUBMISSION DETAILS: All submissions are to be submitted through the assessment link in Moodle, by uploading your file following the on-screen instructions.
Note: that all submissions are processed through the similarity detection software (called Turnitin), hence the requirement to submit the Publisher or PowerPoint documents as pdf files. You must ensure that all the work is your own, in line with CQUniversity requirements.
Documents required for submission. (Four Documents are mandatory)
- Document 1. Map with tracks drawn (pdf)
- Document 2. Navigation Flight Plan (PDF/word file). Please use the format that you are
currently using for your flight training. All formats are acceptable. Sample Navigation Flight Plan is placed in page 5.
- Document 3. Weather Forecast or Weather Assumptions for each leg.
- Document 4. Answers for each leg (All answers in one document: pdf/word)
a) Leg 1 (12 Questions) – Refer page 2 of this document.
- Leg 2 (08 Questions) – Refer page 3 of this document.
c) Leg 3 (10 Questions) – Refer page 3 of this document.
