Introduction – 500 words (+/- 10%)
This should include an overview of the topic and the key points for discussion (including links and appropriate referencing) you are going to discuss.
If there are a lot of areas and too many to discuss you may want to rationalise why you have chosen the topic and choose two or three key areas along with any definitive information such as a definition or links to sections of policy and not the whole policy.
First person
If you are linking the assignment to a particular experience and impact in your own workplace, then you may want to use ‘I’ first person, you will need to include a model of reflection to support the impact and again use Harvard referencing throughout.
Example
During this essay I will discuss [Topic] and the impact this has had on my workplace and the care delivery for patients. I will use [Choose a reflective model e.g.
Rolfe (2001)] as a framework to…
Third Person
If you want to write in the third person, critically analysing the impact on the environment/ workplace in general or your overall area, a reflective model is still required.
Example
During this essay factors arising from [TOPIC] will be explored which has had an impact on the care delivery within [area of practice]. Using the reflective model [Choose a reflective model e.g., Rolfe (2001)] as a framework to support the use of literature [references to literature here that you have used].
The ‘middle bit’ /main body – 1500 words (+/- 10%)
This is where the topic and key themes are discussed [as mentioned in the introduction]. There should be a focus on care delivery and the impact on practice, identifying general issues with development and context of the specific issues.
Literature is evaluated and critical analysis developed with continued links to literature and referencing [Harvard] with a logical flow.
Key themes are discussed and developed in paragraphs to provide focus, each theme being introduced and supported, then closing each paragraph.
As part of the reflective process this part is where you will critically evaluate and critically analyse and use the reflective model to draw on key questions as part of the reflective process.
Conclusion – 500 words (+/- 10%)
This is where you sum up. It should contain the major points made and identify any outcomes as part of the reflective process. There may be recommendations you can make or be able to draw insight from your own practice, adopting changes you may need to make or that of your colleagues.
