Guidelines for HRM Paper
Each of you must write and submit an original 10-12 page (2500-3000 words, double-spaced, 12 point font) HRM research paper. The purpose of this paper is fourfold. First, you must identify and document evidence for a pervasive, real HRM problem in business organizations. Second, you must summarize current academic and non-academic literature related to your HRM problem. Third, you must provide a recommended solution to your HRM problem. Your solution must be firmly grounded in the academic and non-academic HRM literature you reference throughout your paper. Fourth, you must discuss potential advantages and disadvantages of your recommended solution in the context of gaining a competitive advantage in business organizations using strategic HRM practices.
Each paper must include the following sections with bold and centered section labels:
- Introduction — define your HRM topic; identify your HRM problem and its pervasiveness in organizations; state why the HRM problem is important; summarize the origin and history of the HRM problem with appropriate literature citations.
- Discussion — main section of paper; summarize current academic and non-academic HRM literature related to the HRM problem; discuss your recommended solution to the HRM problem; make sure your recommendation is firmly grounded in current academic and non-academic HRM literature
- Conclusion — bottom-line, take-home message of your HRM problem and recommended solution; summarize main points; don’t introduce new material.
- References Cited — each reference cited in text must be cited alphabetically in this section.
Examples of potential HRM paper topics you may pursue include, but are not limited to, the following: Problems with aligning HRM strategy with business strategy; gender-, race-, or age-based discrimination in employee recruitment or selection; managing diversity in the workplace; problems with on-line employee recruitment; problems with certain employee selection devices; managing sexual harassment in organizations; managing consensual relationships (i.e., workplace romances) in organizations; problems with certain job analysis techniques; problems with performance management systems; problems with certain performance appraisal methods; effects of technology on HRM; problems with assessing the effectiveness of employee training & development programs; employee turnover; employee retention; managing outsourcing of work; effects of employees’ alternative work arrangements on HRM; employer/union relations.
