Assessment Brief:

Utilising the knowledge you have gained through the lectures, seminars and workshops in this module as well as your own research into the literature, please write a 2000 word report which includes a 1 page coach-friendly summary based upon the scenario outlined below.

Formatting and Submission Guidelines:

There are two sections to this assignment, a report, and a one page coach summary. The report must be 1.5 line spaced, times new roman, font size 12, with 2.54 cm margins on all sides. You must include appropriately sized and presented results (figure(s) or table(s)). Please adhere to APA 7th Edition formatting. The coach summary must fit on 1 A4 page. The coach summary must adhere to APA 7th edition referencing, but otherwise the formatting on this 1 A4 page summary can be more informal and modified as required to be ‘coach-appropriate.’

You have recently started working with a national team athlete as their sport scientist.

The coach has given you data on some tests that were completed with this team. The head sport scientist has requested that you provide a scientific report to your sports science colleagues and a one-page summary of the findings to forward onto the coach. The report should include the following headings, please note relative mark weightings are provided by each subheading. Please use these mark weightings to direct your word count:

  • Introduction (30%): An introduction to the topic of physiological assessment relevant to the data you have been given. Include relevant literature and concepts that relate to physiological testing.
  • Results(20%):Presentation of results and assessment of the athletes strengths and weaknesses for the various tests in relation to the literature.
  • Discussion (40%): Summary of your findings and any recommendations for focus of future training based upon results discussed. Ensure you critically discuss the results and contextualise them in relation to the literature.
  • Coach friendly summary (10%): A 1-page summary of the key points from your report that is designed to be appropriately pitched for a coach to understand. It should include any information that may influence their coaching practice e.g. training programmes

These assessments will be subject to mark verification, whereby a second member of staff scans 10% (min 6, max 20) of the assessments to ascertain that the marks for the module are broadly appropriate and have been fairly arrived at.

Shows some originality of thought with good critique, is aware of the limits of knowledge. Appropriate use of scientific language in well-structured sentences. Well-presented and clear adherence to guidance information. Good review of physiological literature. Good analysis of results and athlete strengths and weaknesses with appropriate and relevant training recommendations. Coach summary is relevant, pitched mostly well and includes most of the key information that may influence coaching practice with some minor omissions. Only a few minor referencing mistakes and/or spelling and language errors, adheres to APA 7th style.
PASS 50-59% as previous plusWork that attempts to address the topic with some understanding and analysis, key aspects of the subject matter covered. Competent introductory narrative provided. Most key information presented. A reasonable analysis of results and athlete strengths and weaknesses, training recommendations are mostly appropriate but may lack scientific underpinning in places. Coach summary is pitched reasonably, while most key information is included there are omissions, in places the language used is not appropriate for the coach.
