- Assessment 2 Photo Essay
In this assignment you will use a photo essay to describe and explain Leiper’s (2004) basic whole tourism system theory as described in the text book. You will develop captions and paragraphs for photos or images that practically illustrate the whole tourism system for an example of your choice.
To do this you must use eight photographs or images that you have taken yourself or found online representing the elements, or components within the elements, and some of the interrelated environments that apply to a specific whole tourism system example of interest to you and with the guidance of your tutor.
Your whole tourism system example must include representation of all 5 elements and some interrelated environments, and then for each of the eight photographs or images write a caption and extended paragraph (100 to 150 words) that relates the subject of the photograph or image to the whole tourism system theory.
You will need to draw upon your textbook and other academic publications (e.g. scholarly books and academic journal articles) to help you explain each of the photographs or images in relation to the relevant system element or environment, and where appropriate discuss other relevant theories and models that help explain the tourism function depicted by your photograph or image.
For example, if you have a photograph/image of tourists you can explain the role of ‘the tourist’ element in Leiper’s (2004) basic whole tourism system theory, AND also you may refer to tourist motivation or typology theories to help explain why tourists visit that particular destination or what type of tourists are attracted to it. Likewise, destination attraction theory could be discussed in relation to a destination image, or push-pull theories in relation to an image related to the tourist generating or destination region, or perhaps include a destination life cycle theory to help explain the tourism development stage of your destination.
Some of the component parts of the elements will be easy to source or photograph, such as an attraction or a type of accommodation at a destination. Other components, for instance the system environments that impact or are impacted by tourism in your example (which could include the geopolitical, economic, sociocultural, ecological, etc) may not be so readily apparent and may be more challenging and require more critical consideration and creativity to depict in a photograph or image. Perhaps the image of a sign at the destination, or a marketing image or depiction of a representative tourism organsiation may be useful in these cases, or a website image regarding a related government agency?
IMPORTANT NOTE
You will need to have a very good understanding of Leiper’s (2004) basic whole tourism system theory and model, what it consists of and how the system elements and environments connect and interact with each other in both temporal and spatial contexts, and also a good understanding of other relevant tourism theories related to the function of system elements.
You will need to read and use your text book extensively for this assignment.
It’s suggested that you consider lots of photographs or images and then select the eight that you feel can best support your photo essay and the theories you wish to explain or include. Thus you must be very familiar with your whole tourism system example – be able to describe all the component parts to someone else.
Allow many hours to research your system, and many more to prepare and write it…this assessment is worth 50% of your total marks, and thus it is not a simple or quick task, rather it requires the demonstration of critical thinking and application skills.
The structure of the photo-essay will be:
Introduction: 200–300 words: Describe Leiper’s (2004) basic whole tourism system theory including its component elements and environmental interaction, and explain the spatial and temporal relationships that connect them, using relevant literature to support your discussion (all referenced according to Harvard style). Introduce your specific whole tourism system example, stating how this essay facilitates a better understanding of Leiper’s (2004) whole tourism system theory in practice (this is your essay statement), and identify the associated theories that will be discussed in relation to the specific function of some of the elemental components depicted.
Eight images and captions: For each of the eight photographs/images write a caption and an extended paragraph between 100 and 150 words that explains how the subject of the photograph/image is relevant to a specific component of the whole tourism system model, including any associated theory. Total of ~1000 words. Use relevant literature to help develop each of your captions. Reference all photographs/images and included literature, text book information etc as per Harvard Referencing style.
Reflective Conclusion: 200–300 words. Address your essay statement, supporting how you feel the presentation and discussion of photographs or images and associated theories helped facilitate a better understanding of Leiper’s (2004) basic whole tourism system theory in practice. Perhaps you can identify specific images, discussions, captions or associated theories that were particularly helpful in understanding the theory or possibly its less obvious components or relationships. This is a reflective conclusion, so may be written in first person language. It should address the research process you have used and what you have learned about the whole tourism system through this assignment, how tourism may impact its environments and how they impact tourism practice. And the importance of understanding, and the outcome of better understanding tourism models and theories for tourism management.
