Answer one of the following questions:
- Critically explain some of the reasons why no universal definition of terrorism currently exists. Is it possible to formulate an objective definition of terrorism that distinguishes it from other forms of political violence or is the term, as some have argued, inherently subjective and politically biased? Base your response in academic debates and include appropriate examples.
- How does radicalization and (non-violent) extremism test democracy? In your response, engage with scholarly debates over the meanings of these terms, and provide examples to substantiate your response.
- Critically compare past (pre-911, 2001) and present forms of terrorism in order to identify and evaluate areas of similarity and difference between them. Use at least two examples from different historical periods.
- In what ways are counter-terrorism responses informed, shaped and constrained by the political, social and institutional contexts in which these are developed, including economic interests and electoral politics? Use examples of at least two CT policies from different states to illustrate your answer.
- Are there necessary trade-off between civil liberties, human rights and security in counter- terrorism policy, or is this a false dichotomy? Discuss this in relation to counterterrorism and counter- violent extremism policy measures in one or more countries.
- Compare and contrast differing approaches of regional organizations, civil society groups and nation states to Countering Violent Extremism (CVE). What sort of reasons can explain different organisational and regional priorities and approaches? Use at least two examples.
