ASSIGNMENT QUESTION

Part I

PURPOSE

The objective of the assignment is to evaluate students’ ability to understand technological determinism theory.

REQUIREMENTS

The theory of technological determinism states that technology – specifically media – shapes how individuals think, feel, and act and how societies organize themselves and operate.    

1. Your task is to critically discuss the technological determinism theory.
2.  Explain briefly the background of the technological determinism theory. 
3.  Marshall McLuhan who advanced the theory in the 1960s, had categorised media history into four distinct media epochs. McLuhan died in 1980.  If you were to follow his line of thinking about how new communication technologies change our ways of interacting, how would you adapt or change.
4.   Is the theory still relevant in 2023?  Why?
5. The theory was criticized because of what was described as a lack of empirical support, hyperbolic speculation, and for being overly deterministic.  What are your personal views?  Justify your answer with examples.

• Write your own conclusion about technological determinism theory in the context of media technological development and how technology is shaping society and culture in 2023 and years to come.

Your essay should include relevant examples, images, citations, references etc. to support your discussion.

TUJUAN

Objektif tugasan ini adalah untuk menilai kemampuan pelajar memahami teori penentuan teknologi.

KEPERLUAN

Teori penentuan teknologi menyatakan bahawa teknologi – khususnya media – membentuk cara individu berfikir, merasa, dan bertindak dan bagaimana masyarakat menyusun dan mengendalikan diri mereka.      

1. Tugas anda ialah untuk membincangkan teori penentuan teknologi secara kritis.
2. Hurainkan secara ringkas latar belakang teori penentuan teknologi. 
3.  Marshall McLuhan yang mengetengahkan teori ini pada 1960an, telah mengkategorikan sejarah media kepada empat zaman yang berbeza. McLuhan meninggal dunia pada 1980.  Sekiranya anda mengikuti garis pemikiran beliau mengenai cara teknologi komunikasi baru mengubah cara kita berinteraksi, bagaimanakah anda mengadaptasi atau mengubah.
4. Adakah teori ini masih relevan pada 2023?  Mengapa?
5. Teori ini dikritik kerana apa yang dinyatakan sebagai kekurangan sokongan empirikal, spekulasi hiperbolik, dan terlalu berketentuan. Apakah pandangan peribadi anda?  Berikan contoh-contoh untuk menyokong jawapan anda.
