Your response must represent a consolidated paragraph addressing all the questions simultaneously. Single sentence responses to each question will not possess significant depth.
Your response should be at least 200-250 words long. Make sure you follow the detailed instructions in the instructions post when composing your response.
- Each group will be given selected pages from either a men or women’s magazine published in 2021 and 2011. In your groups, use these materials to discuss the following questions:
- How is the magazine laid out? What do you see in its pages?
- What products are being sold and how might these relate to a specific “lifestyle”?
- How would you describe the “media tribe” attached to these magazines?
- Can you think of anything about these magazines that promotes gendered stereotypes?

This week’s media analysis tasks aim to integrate the lecture and readings’ theoretical focus on how consumption relates to the production of identity – both personal and group – to fashion.
choose ONE of the media analysis tasks and complete it. You are free to choose whichever is most interesting to you. You only need to do one (completing both will not give you extra credit). Post your response to the appropriate thread.
In completing the media analysis tasks, ensure that you answer the relevant questions on the slide (see detailed instructions in relevant thread). Importantly, you must use the following theoretical tools from the lecture to produce your analysis:
- consumerism
- media tribalism
- habitus (including disposition and mimesis)
- sartorial performance
Your response should also reference the readings where relevant. You must reflect on and utilize concrete examples from the relevant media texts, translating Japanese language material into English where relevant (ensure you include the original Japanese in parenthesis).
Your post should be at least 200 words long and no more than 250 words long.
Ensure that your responses do not fall into the traps of nihonjinron and Orientalism that we identified in the previous Week’s classes.
