Assessment task details – provide a description of the task
You have been tasked by a customer to design a linear power supply and they have given you the following block diagram, outlining their requirements:
(a) Design a power supply circuit that would fulfil these design requirements, showing clear design calculations to justify your component selection.
(b) Simulate your design using Multisim, or other suitable computer simulation software, and provide screen prints showing the performance of your design (currents, voltages, waveforms etc.).
(c) If possible, and can be achieved safely, you may also provide evidence of practical implementation of your design. This does not have to be the entire
circuit but can be the demonstration of one or more of the aspects of the block diagram on the input waveform. For instance, to demonstrate the operation of the rectifier.
(d) Suggest any improvements that you think could be made to the customers’ original design. Explain why these improvements would be a good idea. You should use computer simulations, where appropriate to back-up your suggestions.
(e) The customer also wants you to provide a test schedule that they could use for fault finding purposes. You should explain the different options that are open to the customer when it comes to testing your design and explain the advantages and disadvantages of the different approaches. You should produce a test schedule that could be used to prove the correct operation of the power supply and include clear test limits where appropriate.
Submission instructions – What should be the format of the submission? / Where should it be submitted?
Format of Submission: Portfolio
Your submission should be in the form of a design report with a word count for the main body of the report of 2000 words.
The report should be uploaded to the Assessment Upload Point which can be found in the Assessment and Feedback Section of ENG60D Moodle.
